UPDATED: Senate panel punts Mueller protection bill to next week

Source: The Hill

BY JORDAIN CARNEY - 04/19/18 10:30 AM EDT

The Senate Judiciary Committee is delaying legislation protecting special counsel Robert Mueller until next week.

"We will hold this bill over today at the request of several members of the committee," Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) said during a committee meeting on Thursday.

The bill was expected to be punted. Under committee rules any one member can request that a bill be delayed for a week, and several senators on the panel have concerns about the legislation.

The move sets up a committee vote next week. But the bill is facing a roadblock to getting a vote on the Senate floor.

The roadblock is McConnell refusing to bring the bill to the floor for a vote

UPDATE:

Grassley: McConnell doesn't control my committee

BY JORAIN CARNEY - 04/19/18 11:15 AM EDT

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) on Thursday defended his decision to move legislation protecting special counsel Robert Mueller despite Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's (R-Ky.) opposition.

"Obviously, the majority leader's views are important to consider, but they do not govern what happens here in the Judiciary Committee," he said during a committee meeting.

Grassley previously told sponsors of two competing special counsel bills that they needed to merge their proposals before he agreed to bring them up.

He's explained his decision to bring up the compromise bill, which limits President Trump's ability to fire Mueller, as keeping his word to the bipartisan group of senators.

But that pits him against McConnell, who has said the bill will not be brought up on the Senate floor.
