Former Progress photographer wins Pulitzer for Aug. 12 coverage
The Daily Progress staff reports 1 hr ago
Bystanders are thrown into the air as a car plows through a crowd at the Downtown Mall at Saturday's protest in Charlottesville.
Ryan M. Kelly
A former Daily Progress photographers picture of a car slamming into a crowd of counter-protesters after the Aug. 12 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville has won the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for breaking news photographs.
The photo, taken by then-staff photographer Ryan Kelly on his last day at the paper, showed the car hitting the crowd and tossing people into the air.
Judges gave Kelly the award for a chilling image that reflected the photographers reflexes and concentration in capturing the moment of impact of a car attack during a racially charged protest in Charlottesville.
....
Kelly said heard about the award as he stepped off a return flight from Amsterdam, where he was honored with a second-place award by the World Press Photo organization for the photograph.

(36,829 posts)Trump "emboldened" the Nazis
America fought a war against the Nazis and supposedly won.
Yet here they are marching to "take back America".
" Michael Von Kotch, a Pennsylvania resident who called himself a Nazi, said the rally made him "proud to be white."
He said that he's long held white supremacist views and that Trump's election has "emboldened" him and the members of his own Nazi group. "
