Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin (R) suggested Friday that children were physically harmed because they were at home during the statewide teacher strikes, when teachers gathered at the capitol to protest school funding.
I guarantee you somewhere in Kentucky today a child was sexually assaulted that was left at home because there was nobody there to watch them," said Bevin, who sought to shut down bills aimed at expanding the state education budget.
Bevin reportedly complained of the teachers sprawled across the capitol grounds, telling reporters he saw them smoking and "leaving trash around."
Because of the protests, "hundreds of thousands of children" were likely left at home without childcare, he said.

(4,341 posts)you can count on them to say stuff like that, then they act horrified when a democrat tells the truth about trump.
These are very crazy people who will do anything to capture a base of crazy people who vote for them. When there is no accountability these things happen, and that is why, since GW, we see more of it on a daily basis.

(36,827 posts)There are areas of the US where infant mortality rivals the 3rd world. You don't see wingnuts marching the streets for better prenatal care. The only value of the fetus is a pawn for appeals to emotion because the honest approach of telling people you want to control their bodies and behavior just doesn't get much traction.

(4,429 posts)universal childcare. Oh, and childcare programs throughout the summer for all children.
I'm a big supporter of that, Gov.

(32,091 posts)on the "axe Obamacare" platform. And KY just passed legislation making it harder for a coal miner to get diagnosed with black lung. Is there some stupid in the water down there or what?
(not like we in Ohio don't have our share of stupid, as well)

(4,374 posts)bevin..another worthless rightwinger handjob...Hopefully the good people of Kentucy
will rid themselves of this bought and paid for piece of excrement....
Last week, the Kentucky legislature passed a bill that will make it harder for coal miners to get diagnosed with, and treated for, black lung: a horrific respiratory disease thats killed more than 76,000 miners since 1968, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.
Heres how the legislation works. If a miner files a black lung claim with the state, only a federally licensed pulmonologist can review the x-rays and ultimately make a diagnosis. Before, radiologists could offer a diagnosis as well.
That sounds like a minuscule change, but consider this factoid from NPR: Just six pulmonologists in Kentucky have the federal certification to read black lung X-rays, and four of them routinely are hired by coal companies or their insurers, according to an NPR review of federal black lung cases.

(1,595 posts)"Governor Bevin knows that for businesses to thrive in Kentucky, the Commonwealth must cut through the red tape of excessive and complex regulatory burdens that continue to be a hardship for many small business owners. While these types of regulations can be effective and even protect public interests, they can also stifle economic growth, impose high costs on businesses and impede private sector investment.
Gov. Bevin is committed to restraining runaway government and re-empowering citizens. With your help, his Red Tape Reduction Initiative will identify costly, ineffective or outdated regulations and conduct a thorough review. The end goal is to allow businesses to operate in a modernized regulatory system that provides them with the flexibility they need to serve their customers."

(14,023 posts)Maybe it's just the typical Republican brain disconnect from personal life ethics to politics (like there's a difference!)
It's hard for the rest of us, you know, with an empathy gene or two, to understand that mindset.
Not sure how he gets to the assumption of a kid being sexually assaulted because they are left ALONE (no school and working single parent)

Someday, maybe a majority of voters will start figuring this out.

If you paid your teachers a decent salary and benefits you wouldn't have this problem. God, what an idiot.

Kentucky governor claims children were sexually assaulted, used drugs while teachers protested
Gov. Matt Bevin (R-Ky.) ...................................
Jefferson County Teachers Association President Brent McKim pushed back on Bevins remarks, noting that the protest amounted to just Friday and that more than 30 school districts participating in the demonstrations tried to give parents advanced notice about closures.
The bottom line is thats one day. He was cutting hundreds of millions of dollars from kids that would impact every day, and thats what we were in Frankfort to stop, McKim said, according to the Courier-Journal. We were there with the overwhelming support and encouragement of our parents who know that we care about every student in our classes.
Kentucky Education Association President Stephanie Winkler said she was appalled by Bevins comment. There is no rational comment I could make to that, Winkler said, the Courier-Journal reported.

Kentucky has become the latest flash point over the battle of school funding and higher pay that have led to recent teacher victories. West Virginia teachers walked out for nine days, forcing a 5 percent pay increase in March. In Arizona, protests and walkouts triggered Republican Gov. Doug Duceys promise of a 20 percent raise by 2020. And in Oklahoma, Gov. Mary Fallin (R) raised teacher salaries by $6,100 and boosted funding by millions. But those figures fell well below teacher demands of $10,000 raises for teachers, $6,000 for support staff and $200 million for statewide funding.
The teachers in Kentucky have also protested for changes to the state pension system, among the worst-funded in the nation, the Associated Press reported. Education groups argue that less generous retirement funds may dissuade younger people from becoming teachers.
