Secretary of Defense James Mattis announced a historic nomination Tuesday.

If confirmed, Marine Corps Col. Lorna M. Mahlock will be the first black female to serve as brigadier general, according to the Marine Corps office of public affairs.

Right now, Mahlock is the deputy director of operations, plans, policies and operations directorate at the Marine Corps' headquarters in Washington, D.C., according to a press release.

The Marine Corps is the smallest of the four military services, and the branch has the fewest female service members, according to the Marine Corps Community Services.

How long until someone spreads that her record is fake, and that she really failed the physical tasks and has a terrible record, and that some poor white male was more qualified?

But I get the impression he *ONLY* cares about who can kill people and break things, not their race or gender. I've heard he fights Trump or anyone on anything that gets in the way of 'the mission'. I bet he'd be perfectly happy with a transgender pilot as long as they bomb the 'right' people.

5. If you're right I sort of consider that a redeeming quality in a military commander..

Not all of them are ALSO qualified to do political work or leadership, and that's ok with me, so long as civilian leadership understands that as well.

is that, by and large they are inordinately practical about shit. Not all of them, of course, and it is not limited to which service they served in, but the fact is that when the shit hits the fan, there just isn't a lot of time for bullshit. It gets people killed and scotches the mission. Grandstanding and ideology is really counter productive and dangerous.

Kudos to this woman. As a Marine, I know that she probably worked hard to get where she is, and yes, she probably worked harder than the men around her. That kind of misogyny is still extant everywhere.

I can't find and link from my phone, buy the West Wing clip comes to mind where the head of the joint chiefs says to Leo, in effect:

I got Real Battles to fight, I ain't got time for the fake ones; that's YOUR job.

Today's Republicans have become much too used to suppressing the vote, altering vote totals, colluding with hostile foreign powers, and just cheating in general.

One can only hope all that will be to no avail from now on.

We'll see.
