Obama plans college-town push during GOP convention

Source: LATimes

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Don’t count on President Obama laying low during the Republican National Convention.

As the GOP gathers in Tampa, the president will barnstorm college towns in a trio of critical states next week, making a play for a key piece of his electoral coalition just as students return for the fall semester.

The campaign announced Wednesday that Obama will visit Ames, Iowa, Fort Collins, Colo., and Charlottesville, Va., on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week, the middle days of the four-day GOP convention in Tampa.

Vice President Joe Biden will be making a more conspicuous campaign swing during the RNC, with events in the Tampa area itself and other Florida locales on Monday and Tuesday.

For the moment it appears both top Democrats will be down on Aug. 30, the day Mitt Romney will formally accept his party’s nomination.

It is not just the college kids who vote in these towns. It is also professors, university employees and others who are in one way or another connected with the world of higher education.
