White House homeland security adviser resigns amid continued turnover in Trump administration

White House homeland security adviser Tom Bossert is leaving the Trump administration, another departure during what has been a chaotic few months of personnel changes.

Bossert, a favorite of Chief of Staff John F. Kelly, is leaving one day after national security adviser John Bolton began the job. Bossert, an ally of former national security adviser H.R. McMaster, was believed to be on shaky footing in the Bolton era and he resigned two days after Michael Anton, the National Security Council spokesman, also quit.

Bossert, a longtime government official who was often behind the nuts-and-bolts planning of the administration’s initiatives, wasn’t a marquee name. But he was liked by the president, senior administration officials said, and often defended Trump’s agenda in meetings.

“The president is grateful to Tom’s commitment to the safety and security of our great country,” White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement.

........Bossert's most prominent role at the White House came after a series of devastating hurricanes hit several US states and Puerto Rico last fall, when Bossert served as the White House's point person for the emergency response and rebuilding efforts.

He also headed the administration's cybersecurity efforts, including its response to Russian interference in the 2016 election.
Bossert insisted as recently as Sunday that the US has been holding Russia accountable in "known and unknown ways" for the interference, citing in part the recent sanctions imposed on a list of Russian oligarchs.

Bossert also claimed on Sunday that "no voter in this country was influenced by those ads," referring to the Russian social media campaign during the 2016 election -- breaking from the US intelligence community's assessment, which did not examine the effect of the Russian campaign on voters.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump's homeland security adviser, Tom Bossert, has resigned at the request of new national security adviser John Bolton, an administration official said on Tuesday, marking the latest departure from the White House of a senior adviser.

Bossert, a former deputy national security adviser to President George W. Bush, had overseen the administration's response to the Hurricane Maria disaster in Puerto Rico, as well as cybersecurity policy. An official said Bolton, who started his new role on Monday, urged Bossert's departure.

Bolton's arrival at the White House also prompted the departure of Trump's national security council spokesman, Michael Anton.

The partial purge raised concern from Democratic Senator Chris Coons, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, who told CNN Bolton "seems to be swiftly moving to eliminate or to move toward an early retirement several of the president's advisers."
