The GOP-led Oklahoma legislature has offered teachers 60 percent of their requested raises, but theyve refused to meet the demand for better school funding. So, teachers are holding out, demanding funds go directly into the classroom.
Yet, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos implied that teachers in the state arent working for the students. The Dallas Morning News caught a comment from the billionaire charter school funder while she was touring a Dallas middle school.
I think about the kids, DeVos claimed. I think we need to stay focused on whats right for kids. And I hope that adults would keep adult disagreements and disputes in a separate place, and serve the students that are there to be served.
The statement seems to be making the case that DeVos doesnt believe the striking teachers are serving the students that are there to be served.

Teachers make less on average today than they did in 1989: https://slate.me/2GM84id

(35,317 posts)In 2015 there were 4 million children born in the US.
The population was about 325 million.
Therefore, each man and each woman bore, on average, 0.0123 child. I'm male; I'm fairly confident that in 2015 I didn't bear 0.0123 child.
Sounds silly, but the average teacher pay is like that, too. In some states it's higher, in others its lower. If there's greater turnover for some reason between 1989 and 2017 (or whenever the stat's good for) then there's going to be a gap just based on service time.
Plus it's just pay, and that's a poor metric. In the '00s there were significant increases in employee compensation, but the gross pay stayed the same. The difference was mostly in health insurance benefits. In my school district one year we got a small raise, something like 0.5%, but our compensation went up something like 3 or 4%. The 0.5% barely covered the increase in what we paid for health insurance. The 3 or 4% kept the increases from being huge. (This was in 2012 or 2013, as our health insurance program absorbed the ACA-mandated changes and the district stopped self-funding the program.)
District-by-district measurements are where relevance would lie, but that would be a pain to compile.

(27,813 posts)I've never understood the reasoning behind this. You serve the students by providing a well-funded, top-rate educational system available to everyone, including decently-compensated teachers, textbooks, materials, transportation to and from school, and meals for those who need them.

(10,023 posts)Betsy would be happy with getting rid of public education altogether...always thinking of the children, and how the elite class can utilize them when they grow up as ignorant uneducated unquestioning masses waiting to be exploited.

(288 posts)Remember that Betsy DeVos has NEVER had to work for a living and has never understood that the vast majority of people must work to earn money in order to eat, live in a home, obtain medical care, obtain transportation, etc. She thinks that teachers don't need to earn a living. She has no empathy and she is stupid. She is a perfect member of the Trump cabinet.

(6,251 posts)president of the American Federation of Teachers - West Virginia. My sister met her during the walkout, at the state capitol in Charleston. Sister says that Campbell is the real deal, an experienced former teacher from a small rural school in Pocahontas County, West Virginia.
Campbell says something in the video that I never thought about, something that really struck me after all of the Betsy DeVos nonsense. Campbell says that education is the last and largest pot of government funding that private corporations have little control of or access to. No wonder DeVos and the Republican oligarchs want to starve public schools and push private and charter schools.

(391 posts)we believe in the words of Bartholomew Bogue,"This country has long equated democracy with capitalism, capitalism with God."
If we just cut taxes on the wealthy then there will be such a stimulation of the economy that all the children can get ponies for Christmas and their parents can get a brand new pickup truck.
If we carry this idea to it's logical conclusion we find that by completely eliminating taxes on the rich we will all become millionaires from the glorious trickle-down. It's a win-win.
