Florida Gov. Rick Scott Announces Senate Run
Source: Huffington Post
Florida Gov. Rick Scott (R) will run for U.S. Senate, hoping to unseat three-term incumbent Sen. Bill Nelson (D) in what could become one of the most contentious and expensive Senate races this year.
The term-limited governor confirmed widespread speculation that he was planning to run in an interview with Politico published Monday morning.
Youre probably surprised, but Im going to announce Im running for senator, he said. Youre shocked, right?
...
Scotts past career in health care has haunted him in previous campaigns. From 1987 to 1997, he helmed Columbia/HCA, making it one of the countrys largest health care companies. He also was at the center of one of the biggest Medicare fraud cases in the U.S. Under Scotts tenure, Columbia billed Medicare and Medicaid for tests that had not been ordered and falsely coded patient records to increase hospital reimbursements. A federal investigation went public in 1997 and Scott resigned four months later, according to Politifact.
Scott is expected to make his official announcement in Orlando at 10 a.m. Monday

Guys! We just figured out why the Trump presidential transition process feels vaguely familiar to us, even though nobody like that ambulatory gunny sack of spite, lies, and hair has ever been the nations chief executive before. Trumps transition is exactly like the start of an epic comic book story, where all of the super-villains break out of Arkham Asylum, depart from their bases under extinct volcanoes, and answer the uncanny call of evil to gather at The Jokers latest underground lair. Theres some fussing and backstabbing, but eventually they unite in their goal to rid the world of Superman, or at least rule the world. Speaking of which, Florida Gov. Rick Scott is headed to Trump Tower New York today to kiss the Great Mans Ring of Unworldly Power and also we swear we are not making this up to share his ideas on how to reinvent the federal government, according to Scotts spokesperson Jackie Schutz. It is uncertain which arcane evil powers Scott will bring to Team Trump, although like the president-elect, Scott has an intimate knowledge of getting rich by cheating, having resigned in 1997 as CEO of Columbia/HCA while the company was being investigated for Medicare and Medicaid fraud. Trump bragged that only he could fix American politics because he was so intimately familiar with the crooked system, so it only makes sense Trumps considering appointing Scott as secretary of Health and Human Services. Now we just need to figure out wholl be Harley Quinn in this movie.
-snip-
Most importantly, Rick Scott belongs in the Trump administration because Rick Scott is an asshole, and so is Donald Trump. So lets kick Scott upstairs so he can run the very department he defrauded. Keep an eye out for Trump to pardon Bernie Madoff so he can be appointed to head the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Kind of a bummer that the potential hero of this story got a million more votes but lost in the Electoral College.

(11,519 posts)It seems he'd be dead meat in any election, especially in senior abundant Florida, just by running ad after ad pointing out that he was CEO of HCA when they were fined $1.7 BILLION for Medicare fraud.

(16,296 posts)Plain and simple.
Story - During the time Scott ran for reelection, I was undergoing physical therapy for an injury. The elderly nurse who hooked me up to all the gizmos and filled out forms was a victim of Scott's fraud. She told me she had to go back to work because of his fraud (something to do with the her former employee and Scott's taking them over). She agonized to me if she should vote for Scott, I told her all I knew of the sleaze and even gave her news articles about his Medicare crap.
After the election (where he was reelected) she sheepishly told me both her and her husband voted for the snake man - reason - they couldn't bring themselves to vote for a Democrat.
That is what we are facing as Scott runs.

(11,519 posts)I live in one of the reddest counties in the country, so I know what it's like dealing with people who are so adamantly set in their political beliefs. However, it appears that 45* (aka Spanky) is beginning to get under peoples skin enough so that they will either just not vote or else actually see the light and realize that they won't go to hell if they vote for a Democrat.

(32,639 posts)We had the recent special election in Pennsylvania where Conor Lamb the Democrat was outspent by Rick Saccone the Republican. And yet Lamb did win by a razor-thin margin. Democrats shouldn't be discouraged by campaign funding, they should make it an issue. Are you voting for this guy because he's spending $ millions more than we are? Don't you want to know where that money came from? Don't you want to know what promises he made to get the money?
Democratic candidates have to be better and smarter, work harder, and earn the trust of the voters. Republicans will never do that, and that's why they all deserve to lose.

(13,904 posts)More spent on defending Nelson means less for the other elections.. I see it as being all about the numbers. Repubs are happy Scott will spend his own cash. I just read he spent $75 million of his own money on his election..

(5,527 posts)He has been unofficially campaigning for the last year. The Hurricane season was just one giant "look-at-how-helpful-I-am" tour.
Before the hurricane, tolls were rightfully suspended in South Florida to help people evacuate. But the tolls stayed suspended for something like 10 days after the storm for no particular reason. There were giant electronic message boards saying "TOLLS ARE SUSPENDED BY ORDER OF THE GOVERNOR" . Like he was fucking paying for them out of his pocket. I was pissed that he was taking credit for saving everyone money when it was really the State Treasury that will suffer.
The aggravating irony of it is that whatever credit he got out of it was entirely due to the "BIG GOVERNMENT" response that they would gleefully do away with if they could.
He is a snake and it is a sad statement that a State full of the elderly would vote for a Medicare fraudster.
The problem is that Nelson might be vulnerable. He is a good Dem but is not much of a personality. Considering how long he has been there, he has a shockingly low profile as a Senator.
