DOJ to appoint U.S. attorney to oversee release of Clinton documents

The Justice Department will appoint a U.S. attorney to oversee the release of documents related to the FBI’s 2016 investigation of Hillary Clinton amid congressional complaints that the DOJ is slow-walking the release.
Justice Department spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores said Monday that U.S. Attorney John Lausch will step in to direct the Justice Department’s process of combing through, redacting and releasing of documents sought by lawmakers. She said Attorney General Jeff Sessions and FBI Director Christopher Wray selected Lausch because as a U.S. attorney for the northern district of Illinois, he is “outside of D.C. and independent of the FBI hierarchy.”
“Members of Congress and the president are understandably frustrated with the pace of production and some of the redactions that they’re seeing. And I think it's so important for the FBI and the department to have credibility with Congress, the president and American people,” Flores told Fox News’ “Fox & Friends."
The Justice Department on Thursday missed a deadline set by the House Judiciary Committee to produce documents related to then-FBI Director James Comey’s July, 2016, decision not to press charges against Clinton and to close the investigation into her use of a private email server during her tenure as secretary of state. Other Congressional investigators have complained that documents released by the department have been overly redacted.
