The Trump administration is pushing for online retailers to pay more in state and local taxes. One retailer that could be affected by a stricter tax policy: the online store of the Trump Organization, which collects sales tax from consumers in only two states.
The TrumpStore.com website, which sells $100 polo shirts, baseball caps, spa teddy bears and other Trump-branded merchandise, collects sales tax on orders shipped to addresses in Florida and Louisiana, according to the companys website. ... The site, which describes itself as the official retail website of the Trump Organization, doesnt collect sales taxes from New York residents. The TrumpStore.com website invites shoppers to visit our brand new Trump Tower flagship retail store in New York City.
The website was registered by the Trump Organization, which is headquartered in Trump Tower. The website contains information about the retail store and the e-commerce site, but it is unclear how ownership of the entities is structured.
Trumpstore.com has always, and will continue to collect, report, and remit sales taxes in jurisdictions where it has an obligation to do so, a Trump Store spokeswoman said. The spokeswoman and the chief legal officer for the Trump Organization didnt respond to requests for additional information. ... A White House spokeswoman declined to comment, and referred questions to the Trump Organization.

(1,009 posts)presence in NY, doesnt even have to be brick and mortar, but the business is registered in NY, they have to collect sales tax when selling to a new yorker. They are shirking the law.

(10,303 posts)... should get involved.
It's all about the tax nexus. Who (or what) is making the sale, and where are they located? It's something I deal with on a regular basis, given that the company I work for has independent distributors across the country, but the company has a subsidiary located in three States.
In short: it's messy. IMO it would be easier to have a federal Sales Tax, for which the revenue would be passed to all the states. Businesses selling less than $20,000 a year would be exempt. States can choose to have a higher rate, and can choose the federal system to collect it.
Its NYS dept of taxation & finance. The only thing is the federal govt cant be relied on as far as equitible distribution of tax moneys...they give a lot more to some states more than others as far as return in services and funding. Some states dont have a state tax and rely more on sales tax. While it would be easier as far as collection, I think its more fair to collect tax in the state the owner lives in. Probably best if all states adopt a sales tax online because of the shift in online purchases.
Hopefully NYS has taken notice of trumps store by now .

(11,564 posts)One? No? It's unbelievable.
It may be that there is some reason this pretty sleazy-sounding state of affairs can legitimately exist, but just how brain dead to you have to be to bring in pitching machines to throw rocks at your own glass walls? A lack of self-awareness? Situational awareness? My god this is stupid.

(23,152 posts)In this case he loosely yells that amazon isnt paying taxes when they actually collect state taxes for all goods they sell directly in states where they have a presence, exactly as theyre legally required to, and they dont collect taxes for third party sellers, who may be required to on their own. Nothing that amazon is doing or not doing is illegal, including their secretly negotiated rates with the usps. 45 hates amazons President Bezos because of the Washington Post keeping us informed about 45s activities. 45, like any cockroach, is afraid of any shining light.
