Tampa Mayor: City ‘Prepared’ To Call Off Convention In Event Of Dangerous Weather
Source: TPM
Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn told CNN the city is prepared for severe weather if it hits during the Republican National Convention next week. Tropical Storm Isaac is forecast to head toward the Florida by early Monday.
"We're prepared for it, we've trained for it, we have contingency plan after contingency plan," Buckhorn said. But in the event of dangerous weather, "human safety, human life trumps politics," he said.

The reporter asks, "Are you prepared to call it off?"
The mayor's reply:
"Absolutely, we're prepared to call it off. I mean, human safety and human life trumps politics. I think the RNC recognizes that. The organizers, certainly Governor Romney, recognizes that. Whatever we do will be based on getting people out of harm's way. Politics will take second place...
"We will move into evacuation mode. The only additional difference will be that there's a few more people here."

(115,805 posts)I certainly do not wish a hurricane on the good people of Tampa. But would a really heavy, inconvenient downpour for the duration of the convention be OK?

(28,158 posts)It's course which would bring into Tampa in most projections has it moving over several large land masses, such as Hispaniola and Cuba. Which would weaken the hurricane before it makes it to Florida.
There's no guarantees it will weaken, or come in there yet of course.

(88 posts)Speaking as a longtime Tampa resident, here's a little background.
The area has not had a direct hit from a hurricane in about 90 years. While we've gotten some rain and wind from other storms, a direct hit is unlikely to be very powerful because of our geography.
Hurricanes gather strength while moving westerly or northwesterly. They lose strength when they cross land or turn east.
For the Tampa Bay Area to have a direct hit from a hurricane, it would have to cross the Florida peninsula or turn east from the Gulf of Mexico. Since either action would cause the storm to lose strength, that means the storm would have to be extremely powerful to begin with in order to give us the kind of damage seen in Andrew or Katrina.
Still, it could cause a lot of logistical problems for the Repubs.
Also, I have to say that anyone who would hold a convention is Tampa in August is not bright enough to govern. Certainly no one who lives here would stay here in August if we had a choice.

(6,925 posts)What does Pat Robertson think of this development? I'll tell you. If a storm hits anywhere but Tampa it will be because the weather was prayed away from Tampa to kill Democrats in another locale.

(10,857 posts)Maybe they planned to pray on it. Maybe their prayers were answered, and an angry, wrathful God is planning a personal appearance. She hasn't been taking my calls lately, so I don't know for sure.

(95,337 posts)But that doesn't mean it'll get hit with alot of rain & wind.
If anything the Hurricane looks like it might be the 20th Aniversary edition of Hurricane Andrew
Same path and Andrew happened around the same time in August (hit Homestead FL on 8/24/1992)

(93 posts)...they were gonna get out of the complete and utter clusterfu(k this convention is going to be and now I see. How could they avoid speaker after speaker repeating their nonsense to be played over and over again to drive home to the independents how frickin crazy they really are? A storm! No pesky Ron Paul supporters to deal with , no christian wingnuts doing something unpopular on stage etc. They pulled the same BS in 2008 remember. Pretending that lil hurricane was gonna be the second coming of Katrina, turning their whole thing into a disatster relief call center and then there was no disaster lol. Of course like all idiots they only kick the problem down the road but if they can make it only be one night of nutjobs rather than the whole week I'm sure they'll take it. I swear this is the greatest show on earth. The most pathetic possibly destructive show on earth, but...

(3,544 posts)that the GOP has had a terrible time over the past month,. Does anyone wonder why? It's been a total train wreck for them since before the Olympics. Then Mittens at the Olympics, followed by their poor choice for VP. Then the whiteboard incident. Then Akin. And now a possible Hurricane? Can't anyone from the GOP take a hint here? No one has this much bad luck. Of course, it was all brought on by themselves, and their own stupidity and rigid right wing policies. I say just give it up. The GOP don't have a prayer in hell of winning in November. Of course, I can't wait for their next disaster too.

(53,661 posts)What does the weather have to do with faith? Nothing--unless you're a right-wing pseudo-Christian. Could it be that God has placed a block on the prayer line from James Dobson? A couple of weeks ago, just down the interstate in Colorado Springs, Dr. Dobson's Focus on the Family organization put out an Internet video asking people to pray for rain...
A genuine Christian would do that. It's not surprising, therefore, that Dr. Dobson's group chose not to pray for peace (which is of no particular interest to them; they are awaiting the Greater Gory of Christ in Armageddon).
Nor is it surprising that the weather they were asking people to pray for was "network-cameras-can't-see-the-podium rain" during Barack Obama's outdoor acceptance speech at Mile High Stadium last evening.
Yet the weather was beautiful for the outdoor ceremony:

The storms went after the GOP in MN instead of the Democrats:
Planners of the Republican National Convention in St. Paul held emergency conversations Wednesday about what to do if a tropical storm continues on its track as a potential Category 3 hurricane threatening New Orleans.
Gustavs projected path suggests possible landfall on the conventions opening day Labor Day.
The storm could threaten everything from President Bushs Monday night address to the broader Republican message of effective government management.

Is God trying to tell the GOP something? They must not have gotten the message last time. Honestly, you can't make this stuff like this up.
