Ace Hardware has pulled its ads from Laura Ingrahams show, becoming the 19th advertiser to drop the Fox News host after Parkland shooting survivor David Hogg called for an advertiser boycott.
Ace had quietly severed its ties with Ingrham, but told TheWrap that it will no longer advertise on The Ingraham Angle.
I can confirm that we do not have any plans to nationally advertise on Ingrahams show in the future, a spokeswoman for the company said..........................................

(4,292 posts)For the past couple of years, I have done most of my home/lawn/garden shopping at a local Ace Hardware (and in my case, nursery) store. Mostly because I hate the whole big-box store experience, but also because the customer service at my local store is infinitely better than the vest-wearing zombies at Lowest or Home Despot. Not to mention the better selection of products!
Think I'll visit my local store this weekend and thank them for ditching the bitch!

(1,606 posts)How perceptive you are to note this.
"..national" certainly does not preclude regional. Inferentially, Ace will continue to target-advertise with Ingraham in REGIONAL (deep red) markets.
Hoping that many will not notice what you have noticed, Ace is trying to have it BOTH ways. That insults my intelligence--and it should do the same for all who can add 2 + 2.
I'll never step foot in one of those places again, so long as I live.

Screw Ace. I won't shop at a place that insults my/our intelligence by way of nuanced wordsmithing.

(1,606 posts)As none other that the former WORST PRESIDENT EVER remarked (I paraphrase), "Fool me once...fool me...ummm"
Don't be fooled.
Any company that has taken a WEEK to take a stand on a clear-cut matter of principle is obviously waffling, vacillating, and conniving in an effort to thread the eye of a moral needle and try to have it both ways.
Imagine: Product line managers and staff meeting to discuss the question "In response to our advertising on this program, how can we present a positive public image and promote our brand while maintaining leverage in markets that tend to be very socially and politically conservative?"
A hand goes up (the new person in the room)...
"Ummm, maybe we can shift to a regional promotional structure?"
There ya go folks. This aint rocket science. Others who APPEAR to follow suit at this late stage are snakes in the grass.

(35,760 posts)I don't think this is necessarily the case. I have worked in advertising with many large companies that have franchisees. There are national budgets, run by advertising people on the nat'l level. Then there are the regional groups/budgets, run by ad people who interact with the regional franchisees. Your post demonstrates an understanding of this structure. Here's where the difference is, however:
The national people cannot tell the regional people what to do, but out of the belief that it's best to be projecting one message, they are usually in synch.
Remember: the money to run these big budgets comes from a percentage of sales that are generated by the stores. It is the store's money that makes up that budget and the ad managers have to get consensus from the stores. Not on every decision, but certainly something like this would be run past them.
You act like there's one person making this decision. That's not the way it works. It can easily take a week to get consensus from the various factions in such large organizations as Ace Hardware.
I think your assessment is a bit paranoid and suggests a level of manipulation and deceit that's not there.

(1,606 posts)Your analysis appears to be premised on a decentralized organizational structure. In that scenario, your argument may hold, as decisionmaking on matters such as advertising and marketing are made at the regional or district-level.
However, that is not always the case, and especially so with national brands; moreover certain personalities and management styles that may dominate a corporate leadership team may insist on compliance with standardized protocols for the sake of LEAN efficiencies and brand uniformity.
I have no idea what organizational structure or personalities dominate or otherwise influence ACE. I could answer that question with a bit of effort, but what seems indisputable at this moment is that the corporate line is a woefully inadequate and transparently deceptive effort to save face quite late in the game.

(24,324 posts)You're really good at that stuff....
Now I could go on about the harmonic, melodic, rhythmic and formal structure of the last movement of the Mozart Symphony #41 and the stunning example of 5 part invertible counterpoint in the coda.-- but I won't because it's too "LATE IN THE EVENING." Baaa bop bop...bop.....baaa bop bop...bop- repeat.
Instead, here is a pretty good analysis of just that piece-- one of the most brilliantly conceived works in the history of Western classical music. And everybody thinks J S Bach was the only contrapuntal genius !
