The Latest: Mexican Senate wants to halt cooperation with US

Source: KUSI (AP)

Mexican senators are urging President Enrique Pena Nieto to temporarily suspend cooperation with the U.S. on immigration and security issues, responding to angry tweets from President Donald Trump about their country.

The nonbinding statement was approved unanimously Wednesday. It asks Mexico’s government to freeze joint efforts “in the fight against transnational organized crime” until Trump acts “with the civility and respect that the people of Mexico deserve.”

The senators condemn the “baseless and offensive comments about Mexico and Mexicans,” reject efforts to militarize the countries’ shared border and ask the U.S. Congress to insist the president deal with Mexico “on the basis of respect and collaboration.”

Pena Nieto told reporters his government is waiting for clarifications about U.S. intentions to send troops to the border before presenting a “very clear” position on the issue.

Mexican Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray discussed the situation with Nielsen, the ministry said.

“In all communications on the matter, Mexico’s government has informed the government of the United States that if the announced deployment of the National Guard turned into a militarization of the border, that would gravely damage the bilateral relationship,” it added.

The Trump administration’s announcement was also condemned by the front-runner to win the Mexican presidency in a July 1 election, leftist Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.

“No to the militarization of the border, no to the wall,” Lopez Obrador wrote in a post on Twitter. “Yes to mutual respect and cooperation for development.”

* make the illegal immigration problem worse,
* create tension with existing cross-border trade,
* crank up the influence of the quasi-narco state, and
* create isolationist fears in other allies such as Canada.

So much winning!.....
