UPDATE: Pawlenty announces bid for Minnesota governor
Source: Washington Post
Former Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty announced Thursday that he will run this year for a third term as leader of the state. I have the strength and experience to solve problems and bring us together, he announced in a video posted to his website. I want to finally put those in the middle . . . first.
The decision shakes up what is already considered a competitive contest to replace Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton, who is not running for reelection after two terms in office.
After mounting an unsuccessful presidential bid in 2012, Pawlenty became the leader of the Financial Services Roundtable, a trade group that represents major banking, insurance and investment companies in Washington. He resigned from that job in February to begin exploring a possible return to politics.
Almost from the day he took that job, you could tell that he missed public service, he missed politics, said Vin Weber, a Republican lobbyist who served as co-chair of Pawlentys 2012 presidential campaign. Tim has been moving around Minnesota in both political and donor circles for some time, and the response among Republicans and the business community has been overwhelmingly positive.

I hope Democrats have someone ready to run in MN. We HAVE to hold states (governorships and/or legislatures) in 2020 for the census.
Original headline/story -
The Republicans decision to return to politics will shake up what is already considered a competitive contest to replace Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton, who is retiring after two terms.
Pawlenty served as governor from 2003 until 2011, and his reelection in 2006 was the last Republican statewide win in Minnesota.
Pawlenty, who waged an unsuccessful bid for president in 2012, recently headed the Financial Services Roundtable, a trade group in Washington. He resigned from that job in February.
This is a developing story. It will be updated.

(115,878 posts)a third time. He's basically Scott Walker with a fake friendly demeanor, but he's every bit as much of an authoritarian, Randian douche.

(129,608 posts)but only with respect to consecutive terms. He's not currently the governor running for a 3rd term, but had been a 2-term one before.
Compare to Jerry Brown in California, who is on his 4th (non contiguous) term as governor there (served 1974 - 1982, and again 2010 - 2018) and since you are a SoCal person, you would know that!

(4,613 posts)There were no term limits in place.

(129,608 posts)where after Bill Clinton had served as governor multiple (non-consecutive) terms, they put a term limit in place.
Hunting around, found this site that had a list of states and their term limit status - https://ballotpedia.org/States_with_gubernatorial_term_limits

(28,086 posts)It is more tradition that governors limit themselves to two terms. If he wanted to, Governor Dayton could run for a third consecutive term.
Timmy has given up a very well paying lobbying job to do this. The question is who promised him what to do that.

(129,608 posts)the same damn issue would come up for him no matter what he runs for. He has been forever tarred and feathered.

(26,331 posts)True it should not be done if we get a good strong Democrat that is likely to kick Pawlenty of ass but if by some chance we do not the Democrats in the state (and from outside it that want to help) should look to funnel their money into a few PACs that can provide plenty of assistance to Franken that cannot be directly linked to the party as a whole.
That would make it difficult for the Repugnants to try and use some of the party forcing him out to drag Franken down.
BumRushDaShow
(129,608 posts)but it wouldn't matter whether he ran as a straight indie or "Reform Party" (like Jesse Ventura) or whatever... The M$M will forever dog him with the sexual harassment charge and would probably bring other women forward to reinforce the narrative. Until WE own the media and its megaphone, we are screwed. It really is a sad end of career.

I guess Pawlenty wasn't having much success finding anything that paid higher than a job pumping lead-free premium at a Minneapolis gas station.

I'd love to have a woman governor in MN, and I wish Erin Murphy had a better chance. But the straw poll that came out of the DFL precinct caucuses in January had Walz at #1, Otto at #2, and Murphy a distant 3rd, unfortunately.
Walz probably has the best chance against Pawlenty anyway.
I absolutely shudder to think of a repeat Pawlenty governorship! No, no, no, no, no, no!!!!!

(115,878 posts)I think he can take Pawlenty - Timmy was not very popular by the time his last term was up, and ever since McCain rejected him as his running mate in favor of Sarah Palin (that had to hurt!), he's got "loser" written all over him.
question everything
(47,544 posts)straw poll. He talked to someone and lamented that he lost to.... Bachmann. Now, there is a loser.

(6,558 posts)This is the man who left Minnesota with a huge deficit and things in a complete and total mess when he left office. Thanks to Mark Dayton we have made a wonderful come back from Tim's mishandling government affairs in MN. Tim is also one of my biggest nightmares, right up there with tRump. Things have been going very well for Minnesota these past few years. Then things began to crumble, starting with what happened to Al Franken. So now we have to worry about keeping a special senate election to replace Al Franken and Minnesota Governors position in the Democratic column? Minnesota is a purple state. It's anyone's call what will happen and I am angry to think that we could lose all that we have worked so hard to rebuild in this state. GRAND COULEE!!!!!!
