New law gives permanent state funding to private pregnancy centers

Florida’s controversial "pregnancy support centers" will receive permanent state funding under a bill signed into law this week by Gov. Rick Scott.

The new law provides funding for the often faith-based organizations that offer emotional support and limited medical services for unplanned pregnancies — while also working to prevent abortions — through the Florida Department of Health.

The centers are part of the Florida Pregnancy Care Network, which has received more than $21 million in state funding since 2007, according to the health department, including $4 million in the current fiscal year.

With services that range from testing for sexually transmitted diseases to parental counseling, they are largely unregulated and their operations can vary significantly depending on the location. Some employ nurse practitioners or physicians. Others rely on church volunteers to take ultrasound images, provide medical information with sometimes questionable accuracy and deliver an anti-abortion message.

If a woman wants to go to such a place. It is helpful to have some place to go, when there's nowhere else, or no one else.

Once upon a time there was a belief in this country that government should not favor, nor otherwise meddle with, religion.

Whatever happened to the idea of separation of church and state?

They want the church to be the state.

Thanks Rick. Asshole.

And deliver babies up for adoption to the rich.

Reminds me of the homes set up in Ireland by the Catholic Church. That didn't work out so well for the dead and abused women and children. Why does Florida want to imitate those horrors?

These places will be unregulated...put those pregnant sinners to work. A huge pool of free labor. The Catholics knew about making money off sinners. And they are allowed to use church volunteers to do ultrasounds and provide medical advice. All done with absolutely no regulations. It's a horror in the making.

Decades-old mass grave of children of unwed mothers confirmed in Ireland

Between 1925 and the 1960s, in a tiny town called Tuam in western Ireland’s County Galway, thousands of “fallen women” and their “illegitimate” children passed through the Mother and Baby Home operated by the Congregation of the Sisters of Bon Secours. After a period of involuntary service and penance, many of the women who came to the home left to resume their lives, as The Post’s Terrence McCoy reported in 2014.

But some of the children did not leave. And what became of them remained a mystery into which few cared to inquire.

This cannot stand. It's a clear violation of the separations between church and state.

These "pregnancy support centers" are bait-and-switch scum who do not serve the best interests of women in crisis.

That dealt with these crisis pregnancy centers. Girl is getting beat up by her boyfriend in a hotel in New York City. Because of the bedding, she miscarries. Long story short, she got pregnant by her boyfriend and they try to get an abortion, but they ended up at a crisis pregnancy center that purported to be an actual abortion clinic. They kept stringing her along until by New York law it was too late to get an abortion. So the girl and her boyfriend to beat her up to try to terminate the pregnancy.

It was extremely chilling and heartbreaking episode. Season seven, episode nine, Rockabye

I drove that car as a teen, sometimes picking up my generous handful of younger siblings from school. I became, as my mom, a heretic.

You want to prevent abortion? The only practical way is realistic explicit sex education and birth control. And beyond that, even if you yourself won't go there, abortions must be safe and legal.

The alternatives are hellish, sold birthed babies and graveyards of birthed babies.
