A single ticket sold in Pennsylvania won the Powerball jackpot in Saturday's drawing, lottery officials announced early Sunday.
The ticket matched all five white balls and the Powerball to win a jackpot estimated $456.7 million, with a $273.9 million cash value. It is the 8th largest jackpot in Powerball history.
There no immediate word of who has the winning ticket or where in Pennsylvania it was sold.
In addition, three tickets matched all five white balls in the drawing. The tickets were sold in California, Missouri and Texas. The ticket sold in Texas won a $2 million prize using the 2X multiplier. The two other tickets are worth $1 million each.

(4,787 posts)Tax withholding aside, the sum of those payments would equal the face amount (in a simplistic example). The lump sum is the present value of the payment stream. (Present value is the amount of money one would need to invest today in order to earn enough money to be able to pay for the annuity over the thirty years. It's completely dependent upon the future interest estimates used in the calculation.)

(54,428 posts)Different strokes, etc. Profits on inherited investments are tax-free, also, if held for one year after inheritance (which IS taxed, as in the USA). In the USA, such gains are taxed at 31.8% net (28% plus another tax of 3.8%).
I'm sure the winner of the $456.7 million wasn't counting on winning in the first place, so I would hope that upon being told they get "only" $273,900,000 when the smoke clears, that they aren't TOO disappointed. If a sudden windfall of $273.9 million isn't enough to cover your needs, you need help.

Who would NOT cheat for a few hundred million?
Of course if it ever got out...no one would buy tickets, and would revert to the honest numbers game!

And it did "get out" but people didn't really care and continued to buy tickets!
