WASHINGTON (AP) — Energy Secretary Rick Perry said Wednesday he had no interest in becoming the next head of the Department of Veterans Affairs, flatly rejecting speculation that he would soon take over the position after the White House floated his name to replace embattled VA Secretary David Shulkin.

Speaking after a Senate hearing, Perry said he’s keeping his job and made a reference to reports as “fake news.”

“I am energy secretary from now until the foreseeable future. Happily,” he said.

Two people familiar with White House discussions told The Associated Press Tuesday that President Donald Trump is considering ousting Shulkin, who has faced an insurgency within his department and fresh allegations that he used a member of his security detail to run personal errands.

Fox News contributor Katie Pavlich said Wednesday that President Trump wants unofficial "Fox & Friends Weekend" co-host Pete Hegseth as his next Veterans Affairs (VA) secretary.

"President Donald Trump is expected to fire VA Secretary David Shulkin and is strongly considering replacing him with U.S. Army Veteran Pete Hegseth," Pavlich, who's also a columnist for The Hill, wrote in her TownHall report on the subject, citing three identified sources.

She notes that Energy Secretary and former Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) is also rumored to be on the short list to take over the VA from Shulkin, the lone Obama-era holdout in Trump's Cabinet.

According to an Axios report earlier this week, Trump asked Hegseth, 37, to analyze new VA legislation while a surprised Shulkin listened in via speaker phone.
