WASHINGTON (AP) The White House on Sunday pledged to help states pay for firearms training for teachers and reiterated its call to improve the background check system as part of a new plan to prevent school shootings.
But in a move sure to please the gun lobby, the plan does not include a push to increase the minimum age for purchasing assault weapons to 21, which President Donald Trump had repeatedly championed.
Instead, a new federal commission on school safety will examine the age issue, as well as a long list of others topics, as part of a longer-term look at school safety and violence.
The plan forgoes an endorsement of comprehensive background checks for gun purchases, which the president, at times, seemed to embrace................

Might have know it was too good to be true (that he would endorse age 21 to buy guns)

(11,521 posts)He had his little bit of glory but the NRA has obviously gotten him back in line. The commission will hold hearings, hold more hearings, then hold even more hearings. A report will be issued in about 3 years, and nothing whatsoever will be done, nothing.

(19,204 posts)the financial leash that they have attached to all of their Republican lackeys, and Trump heeled like a good little puppy should.
Trump is notorious for stiffing contractors who do work for him. Then he dares them to litigate. That's his modus operandi. When you agree to allow the NRA to own a piece of you, that's a tactic that may prove to be hazardous to your health. If you take their money, you'll want to be sure to give them their money's worth IF you want to go through life with the standard issue number of holes nature provides the human body. The NRA would be more than happy to provide additional holes if so inclined.
Fuck the NRA, and fuck every politician who takes their blood money, no matter which political party they belong to. The vast majority of their purchased politicians happen to have a (R) after their name, however. Democrats get very little money from the death merchants, and I want it to stay that way. I'd like to get them out of the politician purchase game altogether, but that's a tall order these days.

(6,556 posts)only the cost of training the school employees. The school will have to purchase the guns. The same schools that cannot fully fund teaching supplies which puts teachers in the position of buying supplies to do their teaching duties. Will teachers now have to purchase ammunition for the guns they will be trained to use? There is also no specific information how annual mandatory training and costs of regular use of gun shooting ranges will be accomplished. There is no mention of trying to reduce access to high capacity ammunition or automatic and semi-automatic weaponry. That continues to put the "good guy" with a hand gun up against the "bad guy" with unlimited fire power. This is an asinine and dangerous plan IMHO.
