President Donald Trump is proposing to use Department of Justice funding to help states train and arm school personnel as part of his school safety policy proposal released Sunday.
In conjunction with supporting firearm training for volunteer educators across the country, US Education Secretary Betsy DeVos will also chair a federal commission on school safety geared toward recommending policy and funding proposals for school violence prevention.
The White House billed the new, two-pronged approach a "pragmatic plan to dramatically increase school safety immediately."
"There has been a lot of talk and too little action," DeVos said on a call Sunday. "There are steps that can be taken right away to protect students."
Tapping into Justice Department resources and finances, the government will help states partner with law enforcement agencies to train school personnel who volunteer, the White House explained. Arming educators has been a divisive, contested issue since Trump floated the idea at a listening session with school shooting survivors, with many students and parents from Parkland, Florida, decrying the idea of putting more guns on campus as a way to thwart mass school shootings.....................................

Instead of limiting the number of people own gun, having more people own gun.
Seriously, is this the solution?

This will not end well. Teachers should not have guns!

(100,097 posts)Bullets coming from one direction are already bad enough! Imagine them coming from multiple directions. Or worse - imagine a teacher in a standoff situation. Or imagine a teacher who leaves their gun safe unlocked or does something foolish with their guns. There are no good outcomes from this.

(4,450 posts)I currently have two lovely high school aged girls who attend a public school with a- shall we say "overzealous" Vice Principal we will call "Mr. X." Twice within the past school year, Mr. X has physically tackled students who he thought had weapons. In one case it was a cell phone and in another, it was a set of keys. Both times the kids were fine, and kinda laughed it off as "Crazy Mr. X being himself."
Now, everyone can see where I'm going with this right? Give Mr. X a firearm (which I am 100% certain he WILL carry if given the opportunity) and both of those kids get shot. Because, you know, Mr. X feared for his safety, and all that.
Dumb, stupid idea, so no wonder DeVos is pushing it.

(51,622 posts)is a ploy by the NRA to focus attention on something that won't happen since the other more important issues like raising the age, banning certain gun attachments and background checks are being taken more seriously by Americans due to the #ENOUGH movement and the FL shootings.

(11,885 posts)Once they get them trained he'll make them pay for it, and their own guns as a condition of their employment. Then attack their unions and funnel more money into privatizing them, and screwing over public schools so he can push his propaganda to them young like the Communist did , like in Cuba. Had a friend escape having that done to him when his family fled Cuba.
