Report: Trump Vetoed Dark-Skinned Women If There Were 'Too Many' at Miss Universe Pageants
Source: The Daily Beast
Donald Trump's 2013 trip to Russia for the Miss Universe pageant has been the subject of intense speculation since Christopher Steele's leaked dossier alleged that the future President got up to some fairly unhygienic nocturnal activities in his hotel suite. An excerpt from the upcoming book Russian Roulette by Michael Isikoff and David Corn has revealed more shocking allegations from the world of pageants including claims from two former Miss Universe staffers that Trump would exercise a personal veto over beauty pageant entrants if he thought there were too many dark-skinned women. If there were too many women of color, he would make changes, said the anonymous staffer. Another added: "He had a particular type of woman he thought was a winner. Others were too ethnic," and said Trump would also veto women who had snubbed his advances. The report also gives a tantalizing detail on the bromance between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying that once Trump returned to New York from Moscow he found an intriguing gift. "It was a black lacquered box," according the report. "Inside was a sealed letter from the Russian autocrat. What the letter said has never been revealed."

(40,218 posts)Is it not a requirement that Miss Universe actually be a "Miss" and that being married is a disqualification?

(700 posts)but don't countries send their own representatives? How can Trump veto that and let another person in instead? Makes no sense.

(21,852 posts)He could decide who got the cut and became semi-finalists or finalists. He could also decide where the contestants stood at different points, making some less visible than others.
I suppose he could use discriminatory bases to do those things.

(32,718 posts)That's not the point of the OP, but really these pageants are fake if the "owner" gets to decide who the finalists will be.
"Only one or two dark-skinned women allowed, but no more." = Yes that's racist!
"I get to pick the finalists because it's based on what I like." = Not racist, just autocratic and fake.

(7,768 posts)I heard Steve Schmidt say that when this all comes out (and it will) it's going to blow people's minds. He said this is the biggest scandal in American history. I wonder how much Steve knows.

(22,396 posts)There's a percentage of POC at which white people start to feel threatened in neighborhoods and jobs.
BumRushDaShow
(129,363 posts)it was usually "20%". I.e., when a neighborhood (or group) exceeded 20% minority, then the "concern" and eventually freakout started to happen by a majority white population.
A recent report from NIH here that mentions it -
It is worth pointing out that although our video vignette methodology has several strengths relative to prior measures of residential preferences, a shortcoming is that we cannot pinpoint the levels of segregation or integration that whites and blacks find most desirable. Specifically, our mixed neighborhood was a majority white neighborhood (three out of five residents were white). But given the subtlety of the experimental manipulation of racial composition, it is not clear whether this neighborhood was interpreted as having token black representation or nearly equal black representation. Thus, although we have evidence from other studies that whites typically say they would be comfortable living in 20 percent African American neighborhoods and a higher representation of blacks makes them more uncomfortable, it is unclear whether our respondents interpreted the mixed neighborhood as falling into that range.*

* - as a commentary on the "mixed" neighborhood reference, I believe the article indicated "3/5th" white (which would be 60%)
The report links to earlier studies as well...

(32,718 posts)However for the last 20+ years I've been a homeowner in the city limits of Pittsburgh in a racially mixed neighborhood. My neighbors are pretty much half black, half white, with a few multi-racial families.
The diversity is comfortable for me, and it seems other white families are also comfortable with it. I say that because younger, white families are still moving into the area, and sending their kids to local schools. And of course the same is true for younger black families. I'm retired now so I don't count in that "younger" group any more. I think we're getting past the racial dichotomies that we all grew up with, and it makes me hopeful.

(22,396 posts)doesn't, they'll move. White parents want "diverse" schools, but that tends to mean 70 percent white and 30 percent POC. If white is a minority, they're more likely to move out.
