Chao confirms Trump pushing Ryan to withhold Gateway project funding

Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao on Tuesday confirmed that President Trump is pressing Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) to withhold funding for the multibillion-dollar Gateway rail project in the New York metro region.

“Yes,” Chao told Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (D-N.Y.) when asked if Trump is "personally intervening with the speaker to kill this project."

“The president is concerned about the viability of this project and the fact that New York and New Jersey have no skin in the game," Chao added. "They need to step up and bear their fair share. They are two of the richest states in the county. If they absorb all these funds, there will be no other funds for the rest of country."

Chao: NY, NJ can come up with more money for Gateway rail tunnel project

Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao told lawmakers on Tuesday that New York and New Jersey should come up with more funding for a multibillion-dollar rail project that would connect the two states.

Chao said during an appearance before the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee that the $30 billion program, known as the Gateway Project, would take funds away from other transit efforts across the United States.

“It’s going to take money from every other transit project in America,” Chao said.

“New York and New Jersey can come up with larger than 0 or 5 percent,” she added.
