Florida officer Scot Peterson defends response to Parkland shooting

Source: NBC News

FEB 26 2018, 2:29 PM ET

by JON SCHUPPE and DANNY CEVALLOS

The sheriff's deputy blamed for failing to enter a Florida high school while 17 people were killed said Monday that he's been unfairly labeled a coward and that he did nothing wrong.

-snip-

Peterson's lawyer, Joseph DiRuzzo III, said in a statement Monday that Israel had rushed to judge his client without taking into consideration all the facts.

"Let there be no mistake, Mr. Peterson wishes that he could have prevented the untimely passing of the seventeen victims on that day, and his heart goes out to the families of the victims in their time of need," DiRuzzo said.

"However, the allegations that Mr. Peterson was a coward and that his performance, under the circumstances, failed to meet the standards of police officers are patently untrue. Mr. Peterson is confident that his actions on that day were appropriate under the circumstances and that the video (together with the eye-witness testimony of those on the scene) will exonerate him of any sub-par performance," the statement said.

I'm not going to judge him, as I was not there. It easy to criticize, as we don't know what we would do in the same situation.

No matter how much training you've received, when something like this happens I imagine a lot of people would freeze up or panic. It's unfortunate, but I could see how he thought confronting this madman would have been a suicide mission. Just terrible all around.

Sheriff Scott Israel needs to go as do all the deputies involved! Period end of story.
This idiot thinks he gets a "pass"? Some leader getting his story out first forgetting how he had his men trained...sounds like ass covering to me.

Incompetence seems to be a core requirement in his department from the top down, fucking assclown

to be dead, and pick up the pieces afterwards.
The plan is that if you're in Broward county, and things go to hell, you're on your own.

Apparently the Deputy has hired an attorney who wrote a letter that is circulating (I can't find it yet) that puts Israel in a bad spot.

The above articles keep referring to BSO training and practices...that goes straight to the idiot in charge Israel.

This is a horrible HORRIBLE event for everyone directly and indirectly involved and aware of the tragedy.

What is, if there is, the military training or official position on something similar to what this guard found himself confronting? Maybe there isn't any hard and fast protocol but it would be informative to know if there is some guidelines.

A trained and armed law enforcement officer couldn't to a thing against a madman with an assault weapon, how the hell could a bunch of lightly armed school teachers possible safeguard our children? The fucking NRA and their apologists are idiots.

but to show that if an armed, thoroughly trained Law Enforcement Officer won't run in and confront the shooter then expecting teachers with far less training to do so is absurd.

That's the point of all this bs!

Dumbass Trump is expecting a teacher to do what trained law enforcement won't do and is trained to the contrary to do.

Until they do that there is no way to tell anything. Everyone reacted as if it was 4 minutes of shots being fired and screams. He likely wasn't on scene until 2-4 minutes after the event started. While we know Cruz left the building after 6 or 7 minutes we don't know when he stopped shooting.
