WASHINGTON—President Donald Trump said he supported giving law-enforcement officials “immediate access” to take weapons from the mentally ill and called for a national conversation on mental institutions. ... Two weeks after 17 people were shot dead at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., Mr. Trump suggested that the alleged shooter, Nikolas Cruz, should have been institutionalized before he was able to harm others.

“In the old days, you put him in a mental institution,” Mr. Trump told a group of governors at the White House on Monday. “We’re going to have to start talking about mental institutions, because a lot of the folks in this room closed their mental institutions.”

Mr. Trump also took aim again at bump stocks, devices that increase the firing rate of semiautomatic guns to mimic fully automatic weapons. Last week, he signed a memorandum directing Attorney General Jeff Sessions to develop regulations that would ban the sale and use of the devices. The device was used in the Las Vegas gun massacre in October, the deadliest in U.S. history.

“Bump stocks, we’re writing them out—I’m writing that out myself,” he said. “I don’t care if Congress does it or not.”

The largest single payee for mental health services. Nurses like my daughter need more than thoughts and prayers to treat their patients. They need cash.

and smaller setting facilities than the "warehouses" of old. But far too many have slipped through the cracks and are not getting the mental health services they need, let alone afford. And what happens is that many end up in prisons that are truly unable to handle them.

We can even connect parts of it to gun control. But the overlap between mental health and gun control isn't that big really.

The shooter didn't need to be institutionalized. He needed to not be able to get a gun. Especially a gun that can fire lots of bullets quickly.

While Donal Drumpf can be off the mark a lot of the time, discussion about how mental health is treated in America is a good thing to have. Example - the mental health hospitals get so packed at times, that the only place to secure people who are having a mental health crisis is the emergency room... and that is not a good place for a person with a mental health crisis to be. Some parts of the country have OK mental health provision, others have not-OK provision. There's a shortage of psychiatrists and mental health nurses.

14. I see the primary residents of these mental institutions being NRA officials and politicians

who rely on the group's donations.

Leave the outside world for the sane people who want sensible gun control.
