KY Gov.: Mass Shootings Are Result Of 'Culture,' 'Psychiatric Drugs,' Lack Of Morals

Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin (R) on Monday told President Donald Trump that a culture of death, psychiatric drugs and a lapse in morality are contributing to the increase in mass shootings in America. He also said guns are not to blame because there have always been guns.
This culture of death is becoming pervasive and if its not addressed by all the imperfect people in this room with a sense of purpose and sense of aspiration, I think we are going to see a continued trajectory that is not good, he said during a governors meeting at the White House on Monday.
There have always been guns in homes and fewer rules. It isnt to say that these rules and restrictions are necessarily bad, but what has changed is what we do or dont do as it relates to acknowledging the value and dignity of every human life, he continued. When you couple that with the number of psychiatric drugs that are increasingly systemic and have very severe warnings associated with them related to depression and suicidal thoughts, you put all these things in a mess and no one among us is bold enough or willing to step up and challenge of the fact that this is a problem. This is why it goes unchecked.
He then called on Trump and his fellow governors to seize the opportunities to call Americans to higher action as it relates to our mores.

Is a Mulligan a lapse?

(23,350 posts)A Mulligan is a do-over, a reprieve, a new start, a forgiveness, a reset. It's a beautiful thing.
But, it requires a recognition and admission of one's own error, a confession to one's fellow golfers in the foursome (or however many there are). I don't think Trump is capable of admitting an error.
He deserves no Mulligans.

(10,749 posts)You fucking morons are preventing the CDC from examining these shootings as a national illness, so, you know what, we don't really know what the cause it.
It might be lack of morals.
It might be cultural, whatever the fuck that means.
It might be the absence of religion in schools.
It might be the presence of religion in their lives.
It might be bullying.
It might be medication.
It might be mental illness.
It might be video games.
The killers might be republicans.
It might be a lot of things, and this particular buffoon may be like the stopped watch - right twice a day.
Yes, it does matter what's behind all of this, and maybe you should encourage your federal legislators to fund the CDC to explore this.
But, you know what, you fucking moron, you know what could help stop the bloodshed? Making it impossible for these killers to obtain weapons of war. Making it impossible for these killers to obtain ammunition for these weapons of war. And so much more. But you and your fellow republicans are too cowardly to make these decisions. You know what? It's time that you learn about and appreciate the culture of those Americans who value the right not to be killed in schools or the work place. Take your so-called gun culture and shove it.

(32,645 posts)Let's point our fingers right back at the churches.
The churches that have done nothing while Christian morality and family values have declined for the last 50 years. Churches that have played politics instead of standing up to bigotry and racism in their parishes. Churches that have stuck their noses into a 2,000 year old book while parish women were abused, harassed or otherwise had their God-given rights and freedoms denied. Churches that have pretended that fetuses have more rights than their own mothers do. Churches that have pretended that anyone with a gun in his hands is more powerful than Jesus.
That's right churches, we're looking right at you!

(455 posts)Fuck you, Matt Bevin. Fuck you and the bullshit, sociopathic, NRA-branded pony you rode in on.
I've been the victim of violence a number of times in my life, including at the hands of people who then claimed it never happened and used my diagnosis as a smokescreen for their abuse. I have NEVER once hurt another living person. I'm not alone. People with psych disorders who go on to hurt others are the statistical outliers- ppl with a diagnosed psych disorder are less likely than the "normal" population to commit a violent act, but you don't talk about that.
If you want to talk about mores and cultural values, talk about the stigma (that you are perpetuating!) that keeps people from seeking treatment for REAL health conditions like schizophrenia, major depressive disorder and bipolar. Talk about how lack of access to quality health care makes psych outcomes far worse than they need to be. Talk about the millions of dollars spent selling fear to people so they will spend money on guns that then get turned on their fellow humans.
Until you can talk about those facts, Gov Bevin, fuck off and mind your own goddamn business when it comes to mental illness. Those of us who live it every day don't need people like you making our lives worse by spreading lies just so you can protect your donor buddies.
