Rep. Akin says he 'misspoke' about rape in interview

ST. LOUIS (AP) Missouri Congressman Todd Akin, the conservative Republican U.S. Senate candidate, quickly backed off comments that aired earlier Sunday, in which he told an interviewer that a woman's body "has ways" to prevent pregnancy during rape and that such pregnancies are "really rare."
Akin, a six-term congressman running against incumbent Democrat Sen. Claire McCaskill, was asked in an interview that aired Sunday on St. Louis television station KTVI if he would support abortions for women who have been raped.
"It seems to me first of all from what I understand from doctors that's really rare," Akin said. "If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing "Akin said of a rape victim's chances of becoming pregnant.
/snip/
"In reviewing my off-the-cuff remarks, it's clear that I misspoke in this interview and it does not reflect the deep empathy I hold for the thousands of women who are raped and abused every year" Akin's statement said."Those who perpetrate these crimes are the lowest of the low in our society and their victims will have no stronger advocate in the Senate to help ensure they have the justice they deserve."

(6,148 posts)I saw a woman actually compare Biden's and Akin's "gaffes". There is absolutely NO Comparison. What Biden said was not necessarily offensive, it was just tacky.
Akin's comments go so far beyond offensive, there are no words. "Legitimately raped?"
Can we stone him to death? Or just rape him so that he can know what it feels like. But wait, he can't get pregnant. He would know what it felt like to be violated and degraded, but he would not have the possibility of pregnancy PILED ON TOP OF IT.
So, he'll never get it.

(7,403 posts)For women being raped, is to bear that child. Akins needs say he "misspoke" again unless he really means that that is the justice they deserve. I see no justice whatsoever in what Adkins is saying.

I don't know what makes me sicker...that there are still people that think that way, or that there are people that VOTE for people who think that way.

(14,177 posts)His clarification was worse. He says he stands by the victims. But, what he really means is that they will still have to have the baby if he has his way. They will still bear the cost of raising the child, because he is still going to try to cut the safety net. But, if you don't need a safety net, well that's good, because you still will be taking care of a child you never intended to have. So, what kind of support is he talking about exactly? Oh yeah, that non-supportive support. Like hey sorry that happened we will put the guy in jail, feel better now? But, nothing to deal with the actual after math of having an actual child.
