Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull on Thursday touted his country's gun control laws ahead of a meeting with President Trump while declining to specifically weigh in on the intense gun control debate in the U.S.
"Its not for me to get involved in a contentious domestic political debate here, but Australias experience in gun law reform, of course undertaken so courageously and effectively by John Howard more than 20 years ago, is a very powerful demonstration of the success of our policy," Turnbull said at a news conference in front of the White House.
"Of course, theyre often cited in the debate here, but well leave the domestic political debate to the Americans," he added.
Turnbull's comments come ahead of his meeting with Trump at the White House on Friday.

(33,364 posts)I don't think the U.S. is ready to jump directly to all of the gun controls of Australia, yet. The grass roots uproar over the Florida St. Valentine's Day massacre may equal the 1929 massacre, and lead to banning of rapid-fire weapons and high-capacity magazines.
Muskets, squirrel guns and deer rifles are not the problem. No rational person goes hunting with a weapon designed to "hose an area" with bullets. We need to stop coddling the irrational.
Buy-back programs work, but we need to stop the supply of rapid-fire weapons and high-capacity magazines at the national level. The manufacture, transport, sale and transfer of such things needs to be illegal nationally. Buy-back programs can be state or local to deal with existing stock. (Note "weapons" is not limited to "long guns". Don't leave loopholes!)
