Special counsel Mueller files new charges in Manafort, Gates case
Source: Washington Post
New charges were filed Thursday against former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and his business partner, ratcheting up the legal pressure on them as they prepare for a trial later this year.
A new indictment has long been expected in special counsel Robert S. Mueller IIIs prosecution of Manafort and his right-hand man, Rick Gates, on fraud and money laundering charges. Manafort served as President Trumps campaign chairman from June to August 2016. Gates also served as a top official on Trumps campaign. The new indictment contains 32 counts, including tax charges.
The filing Thursday comes at a time of significant uncertainty in the case about when a trial might happen, or even who the defense lawyers will be. Last week, U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson criticized both sides for what she called unacceptable delays in a case which still doesnt have a trial date set.
Manafort and Gates were hit with a 12-count indictment in October the first criminal charges in Muellers probe of Russian interference with the 2016 election. That indictment focused not on events in the 2016 race but financial transactions involving work by Manafort and Gates for a Ukrainian political party, and their failure to notify U.S. authorities that they were allegedly acting as lobbyists for a foreign government.

I get probably 90% of my news from DU now. Don't have to watch the blabbering talking heads.

(1,474 posts)I get most of my news from DU. I like watching Nicolle because of her rage against trump. Of course, she has rage against the machine she helped build, but still. Also, Rachel helps me understand how things fit together. Nicole is fun to watch, but like DU, Rachel ROCKS! Thanks for the post BumRushDaShow. Also, I am a little ignorant. What does LBNer stand for?
BumRushDaShow
(129,096 posts)which is the name of this forum, so "LBNer" is... well... a news junkie. I usually sit on DU's main homepage and look at the news column (and refresh it to update) and also look at the trending threads from other forums... then I may pop over to General Discussion.
Since I get up early in the morning and tend to hit the bed earlier, so if something is really going on, I'll listen to Rachel on SiriusXM (it has MSNBC as a channel) while in bed. I have purposely had no TV in my bedroom (been like that for almost 25 years).

(1,474 posts)I feel a little less ignorant. I also refuse to have a TV in my bedroom. Bedroom is for sleeping - once had other dreams for bedroom but now is just an old memory.

(364 posts)Since a Manafort cooperation would require him to roll over on Russian mobsters, wouldnt such a deal require some sort of witness protection? Otherwise he may have to spend the rest of his life in prison but at least he would still be alive.

(188 posts)Yesterday a sealed filing was made to the case number indicating the case against Manafort and Gates.
Does anyone know if this is just the unsealing of that document, or is this something separate?
BumRushDaShow
(129,096 posts)there was one filing dealing with Gates' lawyers that was sealed. This may be separate.
Just saw on the GD thread that this may have come from 2 different grand juries - the one yesterday that you may be referencing and this one today. I.e., a D.C. Grand Jury & a Virginia Grand Jury.

(19,962 posts)Barry Pollack represents individuals and corporations in criminal investigations and trials, and in other government enforcement matters such as Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) proceedings. Mr. Pollack also conducts corporate investigations. As a former certified public accountant (CPA), a substantial focus of his practice is the litigation of complex financial matters. Mr. Pollack's clients have included Fortune 500 corporations and their senior executives and high-ranking government officials, including members of Congress.
Mr. Pollack has extensive jury trial experience and is best known for his skills in the courtroom. Chambers USA describes Mr. Pollack as a "thorough and deep-thinking lawyer" who is well known for his "tenacity, willingness and ability to fight cases in the courtroom," and who "lives, breathes and sleeps trials, and has such a natural way in front of juries." The 2015 edition of Who's Who Legal: Business Crime Defence lists Mr. Pollack as a premier lawyer, noting that he is described as "incredibly gifted." Mr. Pollack obtained acquittals on all counts on behalf of a former executive of Enron Corporation in a federal criminal case, following a month long jury trial. Mr. Pollacks client was one of only two Enron executives to be acquitted by a jury. Most recently, Mr. Pollack obtained a not guilty verdict on all counts in a federal criminal bribery and fraud jury trial in Virginia.

(15,286 posts)I'm sure he'd like another crack at Mr Pollack.
I think Gates will flip. Pollack will review the evidence and probably tell him not to risk jail protecting either Manafort or Trump.
Manafort might be a tougher nut. I think Mueller will find a way to revoke Manafort's bail agreement and put him jail until trial. Manafort hates home confinement now, imagine how he'll feel abou
Even if Trump pardons them, they will have to testify because they're no longer in jeopardy of federal indictment.

One bank lender questioned Manafort about a $300,000 delinquency on his American Express card, which was more than 90 days past due. The delinquency significantly affected Manaforts credit rating score. In response, according to the indictment, Manafort got Gates to supply a letter falsely claiming that he, not Manafort, had borrowed the card to make the purchases and would pay him back.
