Navy: Bangor nuclear submarine base closed after intruder claims to have bombs

Source: KOMO News

BANGOR, Wash. - The Navy's nuclear submarine base at Bangor in Kitsap County has been closed Thursday after a suspect drove onto the base and claimed to have an explosive device, Navy officials said

The incident unfolded at about 9 a.m. when a black SUV entered the Bangor submarine base at the Trident vehicle inspection gate.

The driver told guards that he had an improvised explosive device on his body and in his vehicle, Navy officials said in a statement.

The driver was apprehended and taken into custody. Security measures were implemented and all gates were closed at the base, which is home to the Navy's Trident submarine fleet and strategic nuclear weapons facility.

The ONLY personnel allowed to carry on base are the Military Police, and that is strictly enforced.

About 2:30 p.m. Bangor opened the Trigger Gate for all traffic. The base said other installations have resumed normal operations. Parents who have children at the Naval-Base Kitsap-Bangor Child Development Center will be able to get on the base to pick them up.

However, the base's Trident Gate remains closed. People within a 3,200-foot perimeter will have to continue to shelter in place, and the Navy said that others stay away.
