Trump says John Kelly would stop mass shootings if he was a teacher with a gun: ‘The bullets would be flying’

DAVID EDWARDS
22 FEB 2018 AT 13:45 ET

President Donald Trump on Thursday insisted that White House Chief of Staff John Kelly could personally stop any school shooting if he were a teacher armed with a gun.

At a roundtable discussion about school violence, Trump noted Kelly was a four star general and a “tough cookie.”

“If he was a teacher, I wouldn’t mind having him have a gun,” the president said. “Because I guarantee you, he can use it better than anybody. There’s not security guard that you’re going to hire that’s going to handle a gun better than him. So if he’s a teacher and other friends of his from the Marines are teaching or other people like that, you want them to have a gun.”

“But almost more importantly, nobody is going to attack that school,” he continued. “Because they know General Kelly is the history teacher. He’s teaching about how we win wars, okay? And he’s got a concealed weapon. But they’re going to know he got a concealed [weapon] because we tell them that the bullets are going to be flying in the other direction.”

when he says, "But almost more importantly, nobody is going to attack that school."

Wannabe mass murderers would probably attack another, unarmed school, preferably one they'd once attended I'm guessing? Or maybe they'd attack a school bus filled with children at a stop before it arrived to school? Or... really any place students gather, like ball parks, that were not the armed school.

And people think Trump's dumb.

to fight on the front lines... their reaction times are not those of a trained 22 year old. And the bullets don't care how "tough" your general is... unless he is wearing a lot of body armor they are going to kill him like any other victim.

Frankly, I can’t even see General Kelly being able to respond now since he does not do any king of arms training on a regular basis.

to be a good one if he did.

He may have taught adults, but teaching high school or junior high school students is a very, very different matter. Much less kindergarten. Takes a special person to teach children and teenagers. College teaching is very different. To get into college, you have to demonstrate a certain level of maturity and knowledge.

You don't wipe noses when you teach in a college. You don't stop fights on the playground. You don't use guns to stop fights on the playground in grade school or in high school.

I don't think that Kelly would ever teach K-12. That's just now where he is as a person.

1. Most of these shooters are disturbed in some way, and have the intention of ending it all for themselves after or during their rampage. So the fear of death is not something they would even consider.

2. Most of these shooters pick a target building for a particular reason. Its not just a random building. Its an important symbol to them.

3. A security officer or teacher can't start shooting someone first because they seem a bit off, obviously. Any shooter would be a surprise, and he would most likely still be able to shoot some of the students, even if he was gunned down at some point. And he'd still be able to take a hostage like this last guy was planning to do. ie..most of the crime would have already been committed.

His speech patterns and logic are no better than an eight year old - he just doesn't talk like an adult. "almost more importantly" WTF does that mean? It is or isn't. And his constant choice of absolutist language: "I guarantee you", "better than anybody", "There’s not (a) security guard", "better than him", “Because they know", "they’re going to know", "bullets are going to be", etc., etc. A person could ask him how, when, why or where to anything he says and he could not give an answer supported by facts. Because he just. doesn't. know. Or care.

The other day somebody used the word "ninny" to describe him. It made me laugh because I haven't heard that in a while. Damn, we're in some serious shit

Aaaaauuuugggghhhh! I can't stand it anymore.

"nobody is going to attack that school"

As Colbert just pointed out, these killers are not rational. They're not likely to care how much security there is. If they can reason at all they'll know they are either going to die doing their deed or spend the rest of their lives in prison. They're not going to be deterred by any kind of security.

Afghanistan combat vet and current high school history teacher shudders at the thought of me or fellow staff members armed and trying to engage a shooter in my 1600 kids high school. I have visions of kids and faculty fleeing down the hallway with a teacher and gun trying to go against that flow of panicked students and staff evacuating the building, holding a steady site picture and engaging the shooter....only to be shot by cops when they arrive on the scene because the teacher has a gun in hand.....Granted there are students that make life miserable for teachers and students, but to engage and try to hit centermass of one of my students is a whole other thing.........This teacher will not go to school armed and ready to engage a shooter. Other veterans in my school think the same way as does one of the assistant principals who is high up in the State 4H shooting team program. He doesn't want guns in our school either....
