Rubio says he supports raising age limit to buy a rifle

Source: The HILL

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) on Wednesday said he supports a law that would raise the age requirement to purchase a rifle.

The father of a victim in last week's Florida school shooting asked Rubio during a CNN town hall event what he would do to work with parents, students and gun control advocates to prevent future violence.

"I absolutely believe that in this country, if you are 18 years of age you should not be able to buy a rifle. I will support a law that takes that right away," Rubio said.

NRA objects to raising minimum age requirement to purchase firearms

The National Rifle Association announced Wednesday that the organization opposes legislation that would alter the age requirement to purchase firearms.

“We need serious proposals to prevent violent criminals and the dangerously mentally ill from acquiring firearms,” NRA spokeswoman Jennifer Baker said in a statement, according to The Hill.

“Passing a law that makes it illegal for a 20-year-old to purchase a shotgun for hunting or adult single mother from purchasing the most effective self-defense rifle on the market punishes law-abiding citizens for the evil acts of criminals,” she said.

Baker said that preventing those under 21 from purchasing a firearm “effectively prohibits” people between the ages of 18-20 from purchasing one and as a result, is “depriving them of their constitutional right to self-protection.”

Standard NRA diversion. The proposal is to raise the age for purchasing rifles to 21; the NRA immediately changed it to buying firearms in general. They go from the specific to the general, and argue against the strawman.

cause he knows he's got cover from his cohorts in Congress. He knows that anything he's for tonight will be voted down when it comes to a vote.

We're all dancing around the issue. Background checks, banning bumpstocks, setting age requirements; when are we going to address the fact we have 84 guns for every 100 Americans?? When are we going to address the fact that we have 5,000,000 assault rifles in homes today?

This is all "window dressing". We'll continue to put up with slaughters by the distraught and crazies. Welcome to America-NRA.

***********

Money is power. Conservatives understand and cater to rich lobbyists because 9 times out of 10, voters fall for NRA ads and vote for conservatives over their own best interests and the safety of their children.

I have a feeling however, that the #NeverAgain movement is changing a lot of minds, quickly.
