Trump tweet on guns in classrooms resurfaces after listening session

A tweet sent by President Trump in 2016 in which he denied wanting guns brought into the school classroom has resurfaced after a White House conversation Wednesday about arming teachers as a way of stopping school shootings.
Trump during a listening session with students from the Florida school where 17 people were killed in a shooting last week said the good thing about the suggestion of arming teachers was that it could end an attack quickly.
He also said it was an idea the White House would be examining closely after a parent of one of the students brought up the idea.
"If you had a teacher who was adept at firearms, they could very well end the attack very quickly, and the good thing about a suggestion like that and we're going to be looking at it very strongly, and I think a lot of people are going to be opposed to it. I think a lot of people are going to like. But the good thing is you're going to have a lot of [armed] people with that," he said.

(6,556 posts)Posted this in another thread, but here goes.
"As a former teacher, I would want nothing to do with this plan. Teachers are trained to teach, not to kill. I know how to handle a gun and am good at it but I have trouble shooting an animal let alone killing a human. A classroom under stress is the wrong place to get "on the job" experience in killing while your class is left on their own to deal with the shooter however they can. On non-shooting days, I would not want the responsibility of securing a gun in my classroom. I've had pretty talented kids pick the lock on my desk drawer to retrieve items they wanted over the years I was in the classroom. In my mind it is just putting one more gun into the mix and additional stress on the teacher who is already dealing with stress from multiple directions. Lousy plan, if you ask me." As far as opposition, I think a lot of teachers would agree with me that this would be a decision that would put more children at risk in a shooter situation in a school. What a deplorable way for politicians to abdicate their responsibility for the health and safety of their youngest constituents.

We could start another thread about how many ways this could be a FUBAR!!!!!!!

(7,529 posts)They can't even write off classroom supplies, and now the gun fans want to require them to arm themselves too?
Normally you pay people who face hazardous conditions on a regular basis very well.

(194 posts)There was an armed guard (actually a police officer) on campus during the Parkland shooting. Never encountered Cruz.
Armed guards is not a solution. Arming teachers is an even worse idea - do a search for teacher sexual abuse/assault and youll see why. Being a teacher is a noble profession, but not all teachers are trustworthy.

".....I did not sign up to be ripped apart by a spray of bullets that came from a semi-automatic rifle.
At the end of my teaching contract, it says that I will perform other duties to be assigned. I do not interpret these words as bleeding to death on the floor of my classroom.
The anger that courses through my body after a school shooting in this country is accompanied by pure panic. I am terrified of my own children dying in school, first and foremost, but I am also terrified that the responsibility that sits on my shoulders as a teacher is far greater than I can rationally accept.
On Back to School Night, I look out at the gazes of the parents in front of me as we silently make a pact. I am giving you the most precious part of me with the knowledge that you will shield my childs body with your own when the need arises.
They say this with their eyes. I agree to this responsibility and make a silent unbreakable oath before them. As I am telling them about the 20,000 years of global art history that I will be teaching their child, I am also agreeing to die. When I am in the parents place at my daughters school, I am asking the same of her teacher. This teacher may end up being the only thing blocking a bullet aimed for my daughters head.
I am furious.
How dare you force me to choose between my own children and those that I teach.
How dare you allow powerful adults who love guns to be more important than a generation of children growing up in fear.
I dont want to spend mornings memorizing my childrens clothing so I can identify them later.
I dont want to spend professional development hours learning how to save a few more lives by setting up barricades. Sometimes when a kid is driving me crazy in class I think to myself: Would I die for you? Would I lose everything to save you from harm? I have my moments when I shake my head NO....."
