Arizona prisons will now give female inmates free tampons

Source: Arizona Republic (Phoenix)

The Arizona Department of Corrections issued a statement Wednesday that it is changing its policy and will provide free tampons to inmates.

Last week, the department also announced it would triple the minimum number of pads that inmates receive per month to 36, from 12.

Previously, incarcerated women who needed more than the 12 generic-brand pads had to ask an officer, who could deny the request, and were limited to possessing up to 24 at a time. Unlike in at least a dozen other states, if they wanted tampons, they had to buy them.

The changes come after Rep. Athena Salman, D-Tempe, introduced House Bill 2222 with the goal of making it a law that the state must give incarcerated women an unlimited, free supply of various menstrual products.

just to get a sanitary pad. And they gave them the cheapest, thinnest, least absorbent products,
knowing women would go through them even faster. WTF did the powers that be expect women to do once they had used up the pitiful few pads they were allowed?

“Bloodstained pants, bartering, and begging for pads and tampons was a regular occurrence,” Adrienne Kitcheyan said of her time there.

Even worse, Kitcheyan reportedly told the committee that if her pants had a blood stain, she would get a ticket for breaking the prison’s dress code—an offense which could lead the prison to revoke someone’s ability to purchase items, including, of course, pads and tampons.

Several men on the committee wondered why they were debating menstruation. According to Arizona Central, Republican Rep. Jay Lawrence, the committee chairman, said, “I’m almost sorry I heard the bill.” He added, “I didn’t expect to hear pads and tampons and the problems of periods.”

this sh*t goes on in the United States. This isn't even about Trump and the whole mess that is him. It's pure abuse of these women because the prison establishment, which employs plenty of females, can. Disgusting and embarrassing.
