Maine students joining in national walkout to protest Florida shootings

Source: Portland Press Herald

Suzanne Hanvey may be “just” a freshman, but she isn’t waiting around for adults to figure out what to do in the wake of Florida’s deadly school shooting.

She and students attending at least five Maine high schools plan on walking out of school for 17 minutes on March 14, one minute for each person who died last week. It’s part of a nationwide student-led series of protests, spurred by the passionate calls for gun control from student survivors of the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

“I want change now,” said Hanvey, a 14-year-old who attends Thornton Academy in Saco. “I’m not going to wait for it. I’m not going to wait for some adult to make change.”

The Maine students have launched online invitations to fellow students to join them in the walkout, part of a broad movement spearheaded by a spinoff of the Women’s March called Youth Empower. Several students said they got the idea from Women’s March social media accounts and seeing announcements about the protest, marked with an “#enough” hashtag online.

support and attend. This includes the event mentioned above as well as others for ALL people including adults, students, educators, parents, community members and local govt officials. Also, there is info about contacting our reps, how much each rep gets from the NRA, calling scripts, voting, 30 ways to support gun control, change legislation, etc. The events have tripled since I first got word on Fri from the Women's March Organizers and the #ENOUGH activists. There are maps, times, locations, details, info, etc. Please check it out and spread the word! This former first grade teacher is sick and tired of teaching students what to do in "routine" active shooter drills. I was shot at and the bullet was passing by my face and I heard it whiz past me...I don't want this country to continue on this path so some greedy politicians can become richer as they wash blood off of their hands day after day. #ENOUGH
