Sen. Orrin Hatch apologizes for defending ex-White House staffer Rob Porter

Source: USA Today

Sen. Orrin Hatch reportedly wrote apology letters to the ex-wives of Rob Porter, his former chief of staff and the former White House staff secretary, after publicly defending Porter when accusations of domestic abuse came to light.

Jennifer Willoughby and Colbie Holderness, Porter's ex-wives, declined to share Hatch's letters but commented on his apology, CNN reported.

"It was a sincere apology for pain he may have caused us," Willoughby told CNN.

Holderness also said she appreciated his apology.

If he had publicized it, many would have trashed him for that, just like some don't like the private apology. After he made his original egregious mistake, he was damned if he did and damned if he didn't. I'm just glad that he realized his mistake and apologized regardless of how he did it. Maybe Trump could learn from this......ummmm.......well, forget about that!

If the senator was trying to do PR repair, the apologies would have been made public. Making them private indicates at least some level of awareness that his words caused pain.

We don't see the content of the actual letter but, from what was revealed, it's just the usual weasel non-apology.
