White House: Trump supports stronger background checks for gun buys

Source: Politico

By MATTHEW NUSSBAUM 02/19/2018 09:41 AM EST

President Donald Trump supports laws to strengthen the background check system for gun purchases in the wake of the Parkland, Florida high school shooting that killed 17, the White House announced on Monday.

“The President spoke to Senator [John] Cornyn on Friday about the bi-partisan bill he and Sen. [Chris] Murphy introduced to improve Federal Compliance with Criminal Background check Legislation,” press secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement. “While discussions are ongoing and revisions are being considered, the President is supportive of efforts to improve the Federal background check system.”

This is the latest push for gun legislation in Trump’s tenure. The first came after a shooter in Las Vegas killed 58 people in October. There was bipartisan outcry and calls to more stringently regulate bump stocks, which the shooter used to increase his rate of fire, but the effort went nowhere.

In the wake of the Parkland shooting, there has been a renewed call for legislative action, with students who survived the massacre calling on Congress to act and planning a march in Washington to demand action.

Why do people keep reporting what he says?

It is MEANINGLESS with him.

to prevent mentally ill people from buying guns? He's a damn mess. He's only doing this because he asked people in his private club if he should.

He has no principles or moral compass. He'll change his mind if the heat is off or he gets enough pushback from the R's and the NRA. I trust nothing he says.

I hate this asshole with every fiber of my being.

It required the Social Security admin to report recipients that were not 'mentally competent' to handle their payments, to the background check system.

"But no data — none — show that these individuals have a propensity for violence in general or gun violence in particular," -ACLU

""may deter individuals from applying for these benefits for fear that their names will be added to a public database maintained by the FBI."" - National Alliance on Mental Illness.

"extraordinarily damaging message" that  "people with mental impairments could should be feared and shunned." -American Association of People with Disabilities

"There is, simply put, no nexus between the inability to manage money and the ability to safely and responsibly own, possess or use a firearm," -National Council on Disability.

The ACLU is fine with gun control. What they aren't fine with, is bigotry and prejudice against people with Mental Health issues of any stripe.

Punch up the entire list of mass shootings and there is one correlation that stands out. Almost every mass shooter was taking an anti-depressant, anti-anxiety medication. I'm not even saying cause and effect, I'm saying correlation.

that the ACLU talks about in that post.

Zero. Not a single one.

If I put on my 'assume best intentions' hat, I might assume that rule would block some people who are likely to self-harm, from acquiring a firearm and committing suicide. These are NOT likely, and there is NO link, between said people, and harming OTHERS. Certainly no mass shootings.

Not all 'mental health' issues are the same.

I hope all those mother fuckers who took NRA money get pitched from office.

BTW what about the gun shows where people buy, sell, and trade guns w/zero background checks?

I have been to a local one and the mouth breathers there were really scary.

...private citizens can show up carrying a gun and sell it but they can do that anywhere, the parking lot, at home, at work, etc.

What you are referring is the private sales exemption from background checks. But that happens everywhere, more so at gun sales web sites like:
https://www.gunbroker.com/
Even there dealers have to do a background check. (most likely they will transfer the gun to a local dealer who will do the check)

It's a private citizen sales loophole, nothing to do with gun shows. And I guarantee you web site sales dwarf any private sales of a gun show that comes to town once or twice a year.

When it doesn't pass, Trump will raise his arms and say, "Oh, well. We tried to get a bipartisan bill through, but it didn't pass. It was the best bill, too! No one does bills like I do. Everyone says...he proposes the best bills..better than any President in history. But the Congress didn't pass it. SAD."

"In exchange for supporting stronger background checks, I can demand-
Approval of the conceal carry reciprocity bill*;
Approval of my infrastructure spending proposal;
Billions more in unrestricted funding for building more border wall.
Hmm, that seems like a fair trade, as long as there are no changes to any of my proposals!"

"I am the greatest deal maker ever. No one can make fair deals better than me!"

*currently stalled in the Senate, BTW, after having been jammed thru by the House)
