Gowdy: I would support a ban on instrument that converts a semi-automatic weapon

Source: The Hill

BY MALLORY SHELBOURNE - 02/18/18 11:01 AM EST

Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) said Sunday that he supports a ban on devices that can alter semi-automatic weapons.

“I am fine with doing away with any instrumentality that converts a semi automatic to a fully automatic,” Gowdy told CBS’s “Face the Nation.”

The South Carolina lawmaker’s comment comes after 17 people were killed when a gunman opened fire at a South Florida high school. The shooting caused Democrats to renew calls for gun control legislation. Gowdy said he is “happy” to ask Congressional leadership about a future vote on gun legislation, but also said the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) “could regulate bump stocks tomorrow.”

The ATF declared in 2010 that bump stocks, a device that can be used to increase a semi-automatic rifle’s rate of fire, were not subject to regulation.

How about an Assault Weapons Ban?
How about a High Capacity Magazine Ban?
How about Comprehensive Background Check?
Reinstate Obama’s policy on selling weapons to the Mentally Disabeled?
How about mandatory Weapons Registration?

NRA contributions: $7,150

“I don’t know anyone who would not pass a bill today that would prevent the next mass shooting,” he told Fox News.

Gowdy questioned the need for additional laws, saying, “if you can show me a law that will prevent the next mass killing, go ahead and sign me up for it.”

You think that a human life is worth the "blood money" of $7,150.00, well your a little late...............

A simple Google search is enough to learn how to use either of those things to make a semi-automatic rifle into a full-auto, or near enough that the difference in rate of fire is negligible.

The issue is not the attachments, modifications, or bells and whistles; the issue is that rifles of this sort are very, very good at shooting lots of bullets very quickly. Add in high-capacity magazines and it's a recipe for... well, the kinds of mass slaughter that we've seen over and over again.

The GOP needs to stop playing coy and address the actual issue, which is that weapons that allow Joey to blow away a few dozen of his classmates don't belong in anyone's hands but those of law enforcement or military professionals.

that is easily to do and in many cases, easy to get. Its already against the law to convert a semi-auto to full auto. What actually needs do is banning all military grade assault weapons, just like reagan did

The bump firing process involves bracing the rifle with the non-trigger hand, releasing the grip on the firing hand (leaving the trigger finger in its normal position in front of the trigger), pushing the rifle forward in order to apply pressure on the trigger from the finger, and keeping the trigger finger stationary. During a shot, the firearm will recoil ("bump" back) and the trigger will reset as it normally does; then, the non-trigger hand pulls the firearm away from the body and back to the original position, pressing the trigger against the stationary finger again, thereby firing another round when the trigger is pushed back.

Normally, a rifle is held securely and firmly against the shoulder, but the loose shoulder hold that creates the rattle to rapidly depress the trigger affects accuracy in a way that is not encountered with firearms that are designed for select-fire.

Bump fire stocks are gunstocks that are specially designed to make bumpfiring easier, which allows semi-automatic firearm to mimic the firing speed of fully automatic firearms.[1] They can achieve rates of fire between 400 to 800 rounds per minute.[2] As of 2017 bump fire stocks in the United States sell for about $100 and up.[2]

killing children should require more effort than just holding the trigger and sweeping side to side.

I'm wondering how many GW Bush political hack appointees were infiltrated and given permanent Civil Service status in the ATF?

They are really expensive, hard to find and have their own serial number and are registered with the BATF.

Is he talking about those or is he talking about bump stocks which actually don't convert a semi automatic to a fully automatic?
