But following this week's shooting in Parkland, the students who survived are not content with thoughts and prayers.
"The people in the government who are voted into power are lying to us. And us kids seem to be the only ones who notice and our parents to call 'B.S.,' " Emma Gonzalez, a student at the school, said. "We are prepared to call 'B.S.' "
Gonzalez delivered an emotional plea for new gun restrictions in a speech on Saturday, blasting President Trump, the National Rifle Association (NRA) and lawmakers for what she called their self-serving and ultimately hollow responses to the shooting.
..................The organizers behind the Women's March have called for a national school walkout next month to protest what they say is Congress's tacit response to mass shootings. The walkout on March 14 is set to last 17 minutes, and will seek to pressure lawmakers "to do more than tweet thoughts and prayers in response to the gun violence plaguing our schools and neighborhoods," the group said on its website.....................

(130 posts)It's also, I suspect, the beginning of the end. Activism is on the rise, and we the people can force wholesale changes. It's worked before. It will now. We need to stay on point, stay united, and drain the fucking swamp ourselves, of the real creatures from the White (House) lagoon, and elsewhere.

(14,308 posts)What's going on with this generation where we have all these school shootings?
I'm an old guy.
When I was a teenager guns were much more available and owned than they are today. In fact, it was not unusual to see a 14 year old walking the street with a gun. I also went to a high school that had more than its share of race riots. Large fights would break out in the hallways. No one on either side ever brought a gun. In fact no one even took out a knife even though pretty much everyone carried a pocketknife.
So what's going on? What's different from then to now where people are now bringing guns to school and shooting teenagers?
Any ideas?
