Hillary Clinton on Friday stayed silent about special counsel Robert Muellers indictment of 13 Russians for their intrusion into the 2016 election, but her spokesman used the news to call President Donald Trumps lack of response to the Russian threat un-American.
Todays revelations confirm what weve long known, Nick Merrill, Clintons longtime spokesman, tweeted on Friday afternoon. Time will tell us more, but Russia went to great lengths to undermine our democracy, & the President wont protect us. No matter your politics, its un-American. We have an adversary that is laughing at us, who will act again.
Clinton herself, and most of her 2016 campaign team, declined to comment on the indictments after they landed on Friday. The former secretary of state did tweet multiple times in the afternoon, but she kept her commentary to the school shooting in Parkland, Florida.
Muellers indictment detailed how the Russians and three entities worked starting as early as 2014 to influence the presidential election, aiming to swing it against Clinton and toward Trump with both online and in-person activity.

Control the media?
Ban bots? If so, how would you do that, exactly, without "accidentally" banning a lot of actual people?
Perhaps shut down the Internet?
Assume government control over Twitter and other social media ... Because government media monopolies have proven so beneficial to democracies?
Sorry. These are not American responses. Russian, to be sure.
That's the dilemma. How, in a free society, do you protect this particular commons without destroying it to save it?
My solution is a virtuous and an educated populace. I don't see that happening in my lifetime. In fact, my personal perception is that people are becoming overall less educated and more polarized and specialized, both in terms of politics and knowledge. But if the Internet and media are used as weapons, I guess the easy solution is to control them and regulate them to bring them to heel. Except "them" is "us."
The polarization is only getting worse, and it's fueled partially by echo chambers. The places where actual debate happens are few and far between. Mainly it's screaming and shouting, where being "right means being louder." Observing or taking part in a civil debate is becoming so rare it's practically a unicorn. I don't see a lot of listening going on. I just see people waiting for their turn to talk. Or shout, as the case may be...
