White House Releases Statement on Immigration Reform Failure, Blames 'Schumer Democrats'

Congress seems no closer this week to passing any sort of bipartisan immigration reform, with a debate on the subject ending in the failure to create a bill. Though President Donald Trump threatened to veto bipartisan legislation, the White House is blaming lack of movement on the issue on “Schumer Democrats,” referring, of course, to Senate Minority leader Chuck Schumer.

Below is the statement, via The Daily Beast’s Sam Stein.

This official statement from the White House accused Democrats of siding “with an extreme fringe,” suggesting they are being “held hostage by the radical left.”

Trump’s proposed amendment, which he made clear would be the only thing he would accept, received the least votes of anything that passed in front of lawmakers today, failing by 39-60. The bipartisan plan, despite Trump’s veto threat, came closest to passage, stalling at 54-45.

"I think my positions are going to be what the people in this room come up with.," he said. "I am very much reliant on the people in this room. I know most of the people on both sides; have a lot of respect for the people on both sides, and my -- what I approve is going to be very much reliant on what the people in this room come to me with. I have great confidence in the people. If they come to me with things that I'm not in love with, I'm going to do it, because I respect them."

" I will say when this group comes back hopefully with an agreement, this group and others come back with an agreement, I'm signing it. I will be signing it," Trump added.

Instead he threatened a veto of the bipartisan compromise and demands his '4 pillars.

I expect that probably 80+% of Americans have no idea who Chuck Schumer is (or cares).
