Trump Administration Plans To Defang Consumer Protection Watchdog

Source: npr

February 12, 20185:11 AM ET

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau was created after the financial crisis to protect Americans from being ripped off by financial firms.

Now, President Trump's interim appointee to run the bureau Mick Mulvaney is making radical changes to deter the agency from aggressively pursuing its mission.

An internal memo obtained by NPR says the CFPB will on Monday unveil a new strategic plan to that end. A "revised mission and vision of the bureau" for the years 2018 through 2022 will call upon the agency to "fulfill its statutory responsibilities but go no further." It also says the bureau should be "acting with humility and moderation."

This new direction is consistent with Mulvaney's other memos and statements and formalizes his plans for defanging the watchdog bureau and reshaping its mission, according to insiders and experts that NPR has talked to.

The CFPB is considered a powerful and independent watchdog. But many Republicans have wanted to shut it down since day one because they think it's too powerful. Mulvaney is one of them. As a congressman, Mulvaney called the agency a "sick sad joke." He drafted legislation to abolish it. So people at the bureau were shocked when the president appointed him to run this consumer protection agency..............................................

spearheaded this movement to take down the US democracy. It really makes me often wonder why he is not taken to task on what he's trying to accomplish. Is is just for money or is there more to it. If this continues, and these individuals that lap this crap up don't wake up, I really fear the US is headed for some type of dystopian society.

They will suffer greatly, and then will be told it's Obama's fault or some stupid crap. I guess the midterms will tell us about the future of the US.

I can't imagine how this situation can continue. It is unrestrained chaos. I am convinced that the plutocrats would welcome a complete destruction of the present situation. The wealthy are absolutely consumed with greed. The tax ripoff is just the start. Their proposed budget has one and only one objective bankrupt the government leading to their objective of the complete reversal of FDR social programs. Most especially these will be Social Security and the latter programs of Medicare and especially Medicaid. They are attacking every progressive legislation from basic medical care to the environment. They will not be happy until they create a society of the ultra-wealthy and the desperate poor. This scenario has been played time and again through out the history of mankind and is only interrupted when the destitute rise up in rebellion. Sadly the French knew there was only one solution, the guillotine.

whatever at the worst. Those thinking this is all for them will eventually wake up and realize they have been screwed. And then it will be too late.

Just looking at the poorest states and all of the poverty in the US, this will be the future for millions and millions of Americans.

Frankly, I just don't get anymore WTF is wrong with so many Americans that they continue to be so willfully stupid. It's frightening. And, we now have a president and whomever else led by the nose by Putin. Hell, Trump won't even impose the sanctions against Russia overwhelmingly supported by congress. That, is very telling in itself. I've been around long enough to see this country in great desperation if this continues past the midterms.

Now, we have continued hacking by Russia into the election system and Trump sits on his ass and does nothing. A major WTF!

about the "mission statement" or "strategic plan". At my DoD command we went through strategic plans like water. Nothing really changed about the day-to-day business. I'm sure Mulvaney thinks what he's doing will effect operations, but it won't. Probably the only good thing about the new "strategic plan" was that top management was gone for a few weeks developing it.
