With Nagasu and Rippon Wowing Crowd, U.S. Figure Skating Team Wins Bronze

U.S. figure skaters won the bronze medal in the team event on Monday, in an action-packed tournament that saw Mirai Nagasu land a historic jump and in which Adam Rippon and other Americans showed they're in fine form at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.

"This is literally a dream come true for all of us," Nagasu said, in comments transcribed by the Olympics news service. "I think I speak on behalf of the team. We're super excited and we're at a loss for words. I'm really proud of my team."

The final results on Monday mirrored the tally from the qualifying rounds one day before: Canada took gold, followed by the Russians and the U.S. team. But in figure skating, a sport in which artistry mixes with strength and technique in unique and unpredictable ways, the old saying rings true: It's about the journey.

Nagasu became the first U.S. woman to land a triple axel in Olympic competition, in a powerful performance that brought a score of 137.53 points a new personal best, according to the U.S. Figure Skating Association.

Congrats to Team USA

Rippon, Nagasue and the Shibsibs were all awesome.

Wow, the Canadian dance pair just took it to an entirely other level, they are amazing. Their gold was so deserved and it shows how rampant Russian cheating was 4 years ago that they didn't win the gold last Olympics, as they were totally the best then too.

3. I have to say I loved the German pairs team in the team short.

Their team's other skaters weren't as great, but their pairs short program was absolutely adorable.

I have a hard time getting into ice dance, which is probably my own fault more than a fault in the beauty and difficulty of the sport. I think pairs gets my heart racing because there's gotta be ultimate trust for the throws and lifts. The German team had that and was able to spare time from worrying about getting dropped to give a great show. As much as I root for the home team they did deserve a higher score than our couple.

Still, talk about disproving the person who was upset that our team was being celebrated for diversity meaning we wouldn't do as well!

I generally like pairs skating better too due to the excitement of the jumps and throws. Last night I found the dancing more compelling that I have at other times since it was the free skate portion which is much more creative. The holds were pretty impressive and athletic, more so than I've seen in the past I think.

8. If you have cable, the NBC app works for watching event replays.

It authenticated our DSL to recognize we had DirectTV without having to sign in, even, though because we don't have a sports package it's a different set of narrators than the one on TV. But I like them better than the usual ones. Don't uselessly talk as much.

5. Kim YuNa was cheated out of gold in 2014, and cheated by a lot.

Anybody with eyes to see and who knows how Olympic figure skating is scored knows it.

Alla Shekhovtsova, with a little help from bought off sleazy accomplices, did a hit job on Kim and gave the gold to Adelina Sotnikova, who even had the temerity to hug 'her' judge after the event.

Kim Yuna is, in my maybe somewhat subjective opinion, the greatest woman figure skater ever, and by a large, large margin.

there is some wonderful discussion of the phenomenon of "Skating While Russian". It apparently does amazingly positive things to one's scores!
