Lakhdar Brahimi, Algerian Statesman, to Succeed Kofi Annan as Special Syrian Envoy

Lakhdar Brahimi, a former Algerian foreign minister and widely respected statesman, was appointed Friday as the new special envoy to Syria from the United Nations and Arab League to replace Kofi Annan, who resigned in frustration two weeks ago over his inability to advance his plan to halt the Syrian conflict.

Mr. Brahimi's appointment, which had been widely expected, was announced in a brief statement by Ban Ki-moon, the United Nations secretary general.

The Brahimi appointment was announced a day after the Security Council decided to terminate the United Nations observer mission in Syria, which was created in March as part of Mr. Annan's peace plan.
