Frasier Star John Mahoney Dead At 77
Source: TMZ
John Mahoney, the beloved dad on "Frasier," has died in Chicago ... TMZ has learned.
According to John's publicist ... he passed away Sunday in hospice care.
The British-born actor famously played Martin Crane, the father of Kelsey Grammer and David Hyde Pierce's characters, for 11 seasons of "Frasier."
John most recently had a recurring role in "Hot in Cleveland." Besides his TV success, John was in tons of movies -- like 'American President,' "Say Anything..." and "Eight Men Out" -- during more than 30 years in show biz.

(27,815 posts)I had to do a double take on his age, though. That means he was only 15 years older than Kelsey Grammar.

(51,613 posts)It was always strange seeing him play the "bad guy" after seeing him on Frazier. He was really only 15 years older than Kelsey Grammer yet played his "old" dad. And his American accent was perfect. Great actor!

(3,115 posts)I loved the episode where Martin insisted on picking out his own glasses:
Daphne: He picked Lauren frames.
Frasier: Ralph?
Daphne: No...Sophia.
And then he spent the rest of the episode strutting around wearing those ridiculous glasses and grinning like the cat's ass.
And who could forget his enthusiastic portrayal of Jack, the West Hollywood bar owner and drag performer in 2000's "The Broken Hearts Club"? As he puts the silly wig on his head, he says "Fuck it!"
He'll be missed.

(8,055 posts)He was great in comedy as well as drama. I remember his excellent portrayal of a bad guy in Primal Fear....
As a side note, I think Richard Gere should have gotten an Oscar nomination for this role..... just sayin'

Don't worry, I asked that question several times. Everyone in my family said it was the mother. LOL.
