Several Eagles will skip Donald Trump White House visit after winning Super Bowl
Source: NJ.com
Several Eagles players plan on skipping the traditional White House celebration after winning Super Bowl LII over the New England Patriots on Sunday night.
Wide receiver Torrey Smith, defensive end Chris Long, and safety Malcolm Jenkins are among the players planing to boycott visiting President Donald J. Trump.
Trump has repeatedly attacked NFL players for silent acts of dissent whether it is kneeling or raising fists during the national anthem in advocating for criminal justice reform and eradicating social injustice.
"They call it the anthem protest," Smith said this week. "We're not protesting the anthem. It's a protest during the anthem. I understand why people are mad, or may be offended when someone takes a knee

And then there's Chris Long, who really dislikes Trump. From his Twitter feed:

Of course, most Eagles hate Trump.

(21,797 posts)He, along with Chris Long, was with the Patriots last year when they won Super Bowl LI.
He also didn't go to the WH last year.

(51,613 posts)Good for them! I am from Phila and my family lived in Center City. We are immigrants, union workers and Dem all the way. My ancestors were there in the 1700s and they would be rolling in their graves if any one of their descendants were GOP!
YEAH EAGLES!!!

(143 posts)...in the early '70s. Going to Philly for Bowie concerts at the Tower and the Spectrum are among my favorite memories from those times. Oh, the Broad Street Bullies took me to the Spectrum more than a few times back in '73 and '74. Dave Schultz was...memorable and entertaining back then.
Congrats Eagles and Philadelphia!

(3,335 posts)didn't invite them. Instead I'd say nothing right now, let him extend his invite, and those who don't want to go, not go and watch him lie and say he didn't want them anyway, or bullshit to that affect, when we all know, he hates when someone he feels is inferior to him slights him first.

(143 posts)...where nepotism isn't expected and humbling when given. I do not know Chris but if he's his fathers son he'd say what Howie said about taking a knee..
"Standing for the anthem is something I would not choose to do, but I fully support the right to do it. That being said, what's being lost in the criticism of the form of the protest is the message of inequality. Put it in perspective: As a white father having raised three boys, there were a million things to worry about on a daily basis. But it's impossible for me to understand the challenges that an African-American father faces at every turn while raising his children. But in a league that is comprised of 70% African-American players, if you're a white player in an NFL locker room, that puts you in a position to try to better understand those struggles, and, subsequently as we have seen, show your support for your teammates in your own way. Understanding starts with a dialogue, and the most important part of dialogue is to listen."

3) A notable number of Eagles will boycott the WH reception.
4) Trump only likes to be seen with winners. Wonder what will happen to his "friendship" with Tom Brady.

(985 posts)A number of Patriots skipped it last year, the number of Eagles that don't show up may not exceed that. Even Brady skipped the event last year (though, at least at the outset, he made it clear that he liked Trump).
