Russian pilot killed after jet is downed by Syrian rebels

Source: The Washington Post

By Erin Cunningham February 3 at 12:24 PM

ISTANBUL — A Russian pilot was killed after his warplane was downed by Syrian rebels in northern Idlib province, Russia's Defense Ministry and a monitoring group said Saturday.

The militants appeared to have shot down the Su-25 fighter jet using a man-portable antiaircraft system, Russia's Interfax news agency quoted the Defense Ministry saying.

The downing of the aircraft is a rare instance of a Russian jet being shot down by rebels.

Videos online showed the alleged crash site in the militant-held city of Saraqeb — the target of heavy strikes by apparent Russian jets in recent days. Pro-government forces have advanced on the area.

Russian jet pilot 'pulled grenade pin' to avoid capture in Syria's Idlib

5 February 2018

Russian media have lauded a pilot killed in Syria as a hero, saying he detonated his grenade to avoid being captured by jihadists who had shot his plane out of the sky.

Roman Filipov's reported last words were: "Here's for the guys."

His Sukhoi-25 ground-attack aircraft was shot down over rebel-held Idlib province. He survived the attack and ejected, but died in a ground fight.

Former al-Qaeda affiliate Hayat Tahrir al-Sham said it had attacked the plane.

TV Zvezda, which is controlled by Russia's defence ministry, said the pilot was posthumously presented with the Hero of Russia medal, also known as the Gold Star.

not in Afghanistan after we gave the rebels Stinger (MANPADS). 118 jets and about 333 helicopters. We are for the rebels, think we are giving the weapons?
