Justice Department official overseeing Mueller and Russia probe under increasing pressure
Source: MSN/Washington Post
Rod J. Rosenstein's tenure as deputy attorney general and the top Justice Department official overseeing the Russia investigation appears to be in peril after President Trump refused to say Friday whether he had confidence in him.
After Trump authorized release of a controversial memo on FBI surveillance practices by House Intelligence Committee Republicans, he was asked by a reporter whether he was more likely to fire Rosenstein and whether he had confidence in the 27-year-veteran of the Justice Department who oversees its day-to-day operations and special counsel Robert S. Mueller III's investigation. "You figure that one out," Trump replied.
The memo says that Rosenstein signed an application to renew a surveillance warrant on Carter Page, a former Trump campaign adviser, and says that information justifying that and other warrant requests to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court was tainted by political bias. The FBI has said it has "grave concerns" that the memo leaves out important material, creating an inaccurate impression of its work.
Rep. Paul A. Gosar (R-Ariz.) said in a statement that he wanted Attorney General Jeff Sessions to seek the criminal prosecution of Rosenstein and several former Justice Department officials whom he described as "traitors to our nation."

Wow, now Trump and House Republicans do not merely want to fire the folks associated with Mueller probe, but they want to criminally prosecute them. Amazing.
This is Banana Republican time.

(16,864 posts)Some are claiming treason in the FBI, that unamed Democratic leaders should be tried for treason, and on and on.
I worry about what the average Trumpers response will be when/if the investigation begins to get close enough to bring down Trump.

(16,864 posts)I just hope the indictments that do come are enough to force the hand of Congress to bring down Trump.

(3,515 posts)That's my prediction. He won't leak it, but reporters will find out what is going on. I think that the news media has been very cautious about reporting the truth about the investigation of Trump's ties to Russians.
If you look at Trump's choices regarding foreign policy advisors during his campaign, the individuals are a strange group. I may be mistaken but from what I can tell three have odd ties to Russia with Page being involved somehow in energy and two have "expertise" if that is what it is, and I am not sure, on Muslim terrorism. They are a strange bunch. Then there is Tillerson who seems intelligent and sane, but who also has an odd link to Russia and who does not seem to have a great deal of expertise on foreign policy (although he is one of the best on Trump's team as far as qualifications are concerned).
Trump seems very tilted toward Russia. This is my impression, and I could be wrong. But there is something askew in Trump's relationship with Russia vs his relationship with the rest of the world and in particular our allies, our traditional allies, in Europe, the countries that have long traditions of democracy.
The Trump candidacy and administration are quite odd when it comes to foreign policy, i think. I'm not an expert in the area, but something just strikes me as very odd and not very practical when it comes to Trump's policy in this area. And he has not formulated a plan to execute the Russian sanctions that Congress voted on. His understanding of the role of the president in foreign policy is problematic in my view.
He could get the US into a lot of trouble and offend of lot of the friends we rely on in the world.
