The chief executive of the Humane Society of the United States resigned on Friday after sexual harassment allegations against him prompted an uprising from staff and donors.
The executive, Wayne Pacelle, who was the face of the Humane Society for more than a decade, had held onto support from a majority of the groups board, which voted on Thursday to immediately end an investigation into his behavior.
Yet by Friday afternoon, donors and employees of the organization, one of the most prominent animal welfare groups in the nation, were distancing themselves from Mr. Pacelle, condemning the boards decision and calling for him to leave. In an email to the staff, Mr. Pacelle said late Friday that because our mission depends on unity, he was stepping aside to allow a search for a successor to begin.
I am resigning, effective immediately, to allow that process to move forward expeditiously and to put aside any distractions, in the best interests of all parties, he wrote.

(14,757 posts)That is all the board is interested in. They strayed from their mission decades ago, and now just serve as a money laundering operation, non-profit style.
Screw him and them.

(27,816 posts)The Humane Society of the United States is a good organization, in my opinion.
They deserve a better CEO than Wayne Pacelle.

(51,284 posts)They do not spend any money to rescue animals ... or very little ... Wayne Pacelle is a con man

(26 posts)HSUS has never claimed to be a parent organization of any local animal shelters. It's groups like Humane Watch that are funded by corporate money and established specifically to attack nonprofit organizations that deceive people into believing that HSUS is responsible for local shelters.
There are plenty of articles on Humane Watch, Center for Consumer Freedom, and Rick Berman out there and they're easy to find. Here's one from the Boston Globe many years ago that does a good job. https://www.bostonglobe.com/news/politics/2013/05/18/corporations-anonymously-fund-attacks-and-influence-washington-policy-through-nonprofit-groups/qyaJIFcv7yYOsQvya6ykAK/story.html
Don't fall for what these smear groups are trying to do to you. They're just like the Swift Boaters and all the other garbage organizations we've been trying to fight.

(10,175 posts)But thanks for the warning.
My local shelter complains about the HSUS and I was just looking for some info on it. After going through 3 different links, I thought Humane Watch was legit.
But when you posted I did one more link and you are right. Humane Watch is funded by Center for Consumer Freedom or some such crap, which has changed its name 3 times and after all those damn cofusing name links, I came to.....you guessed it Berman, the fast food promoter and hater of science, animals and sensible regulation. Did he coin that ignorant phrase "the Nanny State"? He sure uses it a lot.
Damn, I swear, you can do searches and research and still miss the f*cking liars and con men. And then add in the Russian bots, nothing is the truth anymore.
I honestly appreciate that you took the time and effort to look into it. There's so much fake news out there and it's important that we do our best to get to the truth.
I don't know if this link will work, but it talks about Berman's own son's thoughts on the man. https://www.prwatch.org/news/2009/01/8168/front-group-king-rick-berman-gets-blasted-his-son-david-berman
This is the guy who has attacked Mothers Against Drunk Driving, for goodness' sake!
That's not their mission, though.
HSUS is there to lobby for better laws to prevent animals from ending up in shelters in the first place. For companion animals, it means cracking down on dogfighting and puppy mills. For farm animals, it means exposing factory farms and preventing their abuses. For wild animals, it means banning trophy hunting. The list goes on.

(26 posts)Here's a list of some of my favorite organizations, with mission statements and links. If you're looking to support a particular animal, region, or topic and one of these doesn't cover it, feel free to comment and I'll try to find one. Thanks for contributing to any worthy animal protection group. Every dollar helps.

What sets Big Cat Rescue apart is that we are working to end the abuse at its root by ending the private possession and trade in exotic cats through legislation and education.
