White House worried FBI director could quit over Nunes memo release

Source: MSN/CNN

Top White House aides are worried FBI Director Christopher Wray could quit if the highly controversial Republican memo alleging the FBI abused its surveillance tools is released, multiple sources with knowledge of the situation tell CNN.

Wray has made clear he is frustrated that President Donald Trump picked him to lead the FBI after he fired FBI Director James Comey in May, yet his advice on the Nunes memo is being disregarded and cast as part of the purported partisan leadership of the FBI, according to a senior law enforcement official.

Wray's stance is "raising hell," one source familiar with the matter said.

Wray has not directly threatened to resign after clashing with Trump over the possible release of the memo, the source added, because that is not his style of dealing with conflict.

I actually think that Trump would be happy to do a Mulligan and pick a director who is more loyal.

If Wray resigns... Gowdy could leave Congress early and take over the FBI.

I think they hope this happens... along with firing Rosenstein. As for Mueller, Gowdy won't fire him... but his budget will be almost zero.

...it has been carefully orchestrated with the White House for Trump to begin his purge.

His staffers seem to understand the implications of a Wray resignation. Releasing the memo may be Trump's passive -aggressive way of challenging Wray as well as discrediting the investigation.

They want him to quit, so they can put in a tool, who will work for Trump, like Nunes does.

I have to expect that the Nunes memo is going to be a big partisan hit job on the FBI just as nasty and made up as the Benghazi accusations where. But in addition to the big nothing burger, this one is dressed with obstruction and a big slice of treason. If classified methods, techniques, or contacts are exposed I wonder if treason charges could be filed against Nunes.
