Lincoln’s (NE) gay rights ordinance won't be on ballot

LINCOLN — Voters won’t be deciding whether to enact a local gay rights ordinance in the November election.

Mayor Chris Beutler and City Councilman Carl Eskridge, the ordinance’s sponsor, have decided against putting the ordinance on the fall ballot, spokeswoman Diane Gonzolas said Thursday.

She said she had no other details about the ordinance’s status. She said Eskridge is out of town and won’t make a public statement about the matter until next week. Beutler has declined to discuss the issue before Eskridge returns, she said.

Gonzolas said she did not know when Beutler and Eskridge reached the agreement. To make the deadline for the Nov. 6 election, the proposed ballot measure had to be included on the agenda for next Monday’s City Council meeting.
