Starr: Grounds for impeachment if Trump lied about trying to fire Mueller

Source: The Hill

BY JULIA MANCHESTER - 01/28/18 10:02 AM EST

Former Special Counsel Ken Starr said on Sunday that there could be grounds for impeachment if President Trump was lying when he denied reports that he tried to fire Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

"I think lying to the American people is a serious issue that has to be explored. I take lying to the American people very, very seriously, so absolutely," Starr told ABC's "This Week," when asked if Trump lying about the report would be grounds for impeachment.

The New York Times reported on Thursday that Trump had asked White House Counsel Don McGahn to fire Mueller in June. However, he backed off the order after McGahn threatened to quit, according to the Times.

Trump reportedly claimed that Mueller had conflicts of interest in the probe into alleged collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia's election interference.

There are no grounds for impeachment while Republicans own Congress.

There is no limit to the outrageous insults and slander from Trump, even before the election, yet he survives/thrives under the heap of praise shoveled on him by his base and his staff.

when Republicans are echoing Democrats, and not only talking about impeaching Trump, but actually endorsing his impeachment, that is a beautiful thing. People like Starr might as well be working for the Democrats when they are out there in the trenches, laying the foundation to impeach Trump.

Just by him putting that possibility into the Republican lexicon, Starr will start them worrying about it. The congress critters are thinking about the public and media blow back that could kill their political careers if they stay aligned with Trump, a president who might be indicted. Worse, they are thinking that Trump's crimes could be so numerous and so egregious, that they may have no other option but to impeach him. I weep for their dilemma.

He can try to cover it with misdirection, i.e. Trump lying about wanting to fire Mueller.

But we all know he only wants to rub one out over Stormy Daniels.

His squalid behavior over Monica Lewinsky shows all...

Fauxbot Host: Well, you say 'IF' he lied, correct?

Starr: Correct

Fauxbot Host: Okay, the Presidents response to the accusation was simply "Fake News", isn't that right?

Starr: That's what's being reported, yes

Host: Well, that's not necessarily a lie, is it? A 'lie' would be, if the story is true, and he came out and said "I never took any steps in the direction of relieving Mueller from duty", right? He just said "Fake News". I'm not sure that can be considered a 'lie'. It's an implied denial but not an actual denial, isn't it?

Starr: Well, I suppose that's true, he hasn't outright denied it, and that's something I'm sure would be considered by Congress ...

He already looked ridiculous when it was shown that even perjury does not meet the level of high crimes and misdemeanors needed for impeachment of a President, now simply lying to the public or media when not under oath is impeachable, sure Ken.

Starr is sowing seeds to grow a story in the media so Trump can come back later and claim "fake news".

Starr is a Republican and his comments are a set-up for the Republicans to deflect and diffuse Trump's problems with the Mueller investigation.

The Trump crew want as many people as they can get to follow these non-event stories, so their real dirty work slips by unnoticed.

Everything is grounds for impeachment and nothing is grounds for impeachment.

Depending on The House and The Senate vote, they can impeach the President for a parking ticket he received 1975. Or not impeach him for strangling a girlscout on the White House lawn.

It's a political process governed by how much The Congress thinks they can get away with doing or not doing.
